The right song can make a normal scene in a movie one that goes down as a classic, and pairing a scene with the perfect backing tune can shed new light on a song you thought you knew. So for the MTV Movie Awards, we honor the music that met the perfect movie and made the magic happen.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote and make sure your favorite takes the stage this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET to collect the Golden Popcorn.

Here's our rundown of the Best Music nominees:

College and Electric Youth's "A Real Hero," "Drive"
If "Drive" had been just a straightforward crime thriller like a synopsis might suggest, it would have amounted to nothing more than an average genre entry with a pretty face attached. Instead, director Nicolas Winding Refn infused every inch of this new cult classic with '80s nostalgia, including an electro-fueled soundtrack, led by the College/ Electric Youth collaboration "A Real Hero." The pick could seem odd at first, but as soon as it kicks in and all other sound fades away, everything just clicks.

Figurine's "Impossible," "Like Crazy"
Young lovers inevitably come to adopt songs as meaningful and important to the memory of their relationship. Appropriately, last year's "Like Crazy" featured a killer soundtrack, suitable for the impossibly cute first love. "Impossible" comes up during one of the more difficult moments in the film, when our ocean-crossed lovers are apart and old memories keep new ones from taking. It added a layer of reality and depth to a scene that felt straight out of real life.

Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" (Steve Aoki dance remix), "Project X"
When it comes to throwing the world's greatest house party, a badass playlist lands at the top of the to-do list, right below "invite people." Just a quick glimpse at the clip proves that there's nothing quite like this Kid Cudi/ Steve Aoki jam to party till the sun comes up or the cops kick everyone out.

LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," "21 Jump Street"
Now if you're more in the mood for party music to get stabbed in the back to, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" may be more up your alley. The song turned out to be the perfect accent to Schmidt and Jenko's first big house party as fake high-schoolers, and it showed that you shouldn't let something like a pesky knife wound ruin your rager.

The Chemical Brothers' "The Devil Is in the Details," "Hanna"
Similar to "Drive," "Hanna" uses fairy-tale motifs and a frighteningly memorable score from the Chemical Brothers to elevate what would have otherwise been a rather typical Bourne rip-off. The music adds a whole other level of danger and makes the tale of a tween-age master assassin all the more sinister and disturbing.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Man leaves jail, boards flight without ticket

A recently released prisoner managed to walk onto a flight in San Diego without having a ticket. KNSD-TV's Tony Shin reports.

By Sarah Grieco, Lauren Steussy and Tony Shin, NBC San Diego

A man released from jail on Memorial Day wound up boarding a plane without a ticket on Tuesday, San Diego Harbor Police said.

United Airlines flight 6323 was bound for Los Angeles from San Diego International Airport when flight attendants counted an extra passenger aboard the plane.

Authorities later learned the man entered the tarmac through an emergency door in the airport's commuter terminal. Although the alarm sounded, the man quickly made his way through the tarmac and boarded the plane with the other passengers.

A witness said he handed his duffel bag to a flight attendant, saying he urgently needed to use the bathroom. He then sat down in a passenger's seat.

The flight attendant realized there were too many people on the plane and identified the extra passenger. He was easy to spot, as he looked disheveled and suspicious, according to Nicholas Blasgen, a passenger on the plane.

Passengers were told to get off the plane while dogs sniffed their bags. They all were forced to go through security a second time before taking off.

"How could this happen?" Blasgen asked, "In this day and age when I have to take my shoes off to get on a plane, this guy bypasses everything. What if he had a bomb?"

The man was escorted off the plane peacefully. He was arrested and is now in jail. Harbor police are investigating the incident.

First Steps in the Home Buying Process | Real Estate Communities

Buying a Home - What to ExpectBuying your first home can be as exciting as it can be overwhelming. For people who have worked in the real estate sector, it is easy to forget the emotional roller coaster purchasing a home can cause.

For us, assisting people on the path to purchase is something that has been done time and time again. These days, first time home buyers can research cities and neighborhoods, example: Marysville real estate, use loan calculators to generalize payment figures, research real estate brokers, and learn the differences between equity sellers, bank owned (REO) properties, and short sales.

Financing:

Do you even qualify for a home? It is common to start out looking at homes then seek financing to see if one qualifies for a home loan. Starting out this way can lead to disappointment and long-term discouragement. The first step should be to seek out a qualified lending professional who can accurately qualify a home buyer using W-2?s, employment history, pay stubs, and credit reports. This method may seem cumbersome yet when a buyer is fully documented the home buying process is much easier.

Selecting a Real Estate Agent:

Who will represent you in this transaction? In the digital age, most real estate agents can be found online through simple searches (city + real estate agent), individual and broker websites, Facebook, Twitter, national real estate websites, and personal referrals from family and friends. With so many choices in today?s marketplace it can be difficult to find an agent who is right for you. It is helpful, and improves the buying experience, if an agent has common interests, is familiar with the area you?re looking in, who is current with today?s trends and forecasts, and savvy with the offer-to-closing process. Take your time as this step can make all the difference in a good or bad home buying experience.

Searching for a Home:

Now the fun begins! Open up the internet and visit your local broker?s website, a national website, or even Craigslist to start looking for a home. Words of caution as not all sites are created equal and all the information on one site may show up different on another site. Find a site you like and register so you can access more advanced features. Email alerts are one of the many benefits of registering with your local real estate agent. The agent can even automatically email you when new homes become available. An experienced real estate agent will be in contact with their clients to let them know if a home has come on the market to give their client the edge over other buyers.

Making an Offer:

What is the amount of money you are willing to spend on this home? Sometimes called a bid, an offer is composed of approved forms that outline the buyer?s and seller?s name, property address, price, closing date, earnest money, possession date, and additional addendum like the home inspection, financing, optional items, well, and/or septic. This is a general list as each purchase and sale contract is unique and specific to that individual property. When making an offer, ask your real estate agent plenty of questions as what maybe crystal clear to them is murky as the Snohomish River to you.

Negotiations:

A common question is ?how long does it take?? and the usual answer is ?as long as it needs to for all parties to come to agreement?. If a buyer?s offer is close to the seller?s asking terms, then it usually takes less time to come to an agreement. But if a buyer intends on submitting a low ball offer then the time could dramatically increase or not come together at all. Be careful about submitting low ball offers because you ?want to play the game?. Purchasing a home is not a game! It should be taken seriously and always remember that, sellers don?t have to take, or even respond to an offer, if they don?t want to. They still own the house and they can do what they want with it.

Mutual Acceptance:

close the deal on your new homeMutual acceptance is a very important part of the home buying process. It is when all parties have come to agreement on every term in the offer. Mutual acceptance doesn?t mean a buyer owns the home yet either. It means that buyer and seller have a mutual binding contract in which both parties have to perform, to the best of their abilities, to fulfill all the contingencies, obtain financing, and move onto a successful purchase.

The home buying process is not simple yet it doesn?t have to be confusing when you are working with experienced agents and brokers. Buying a home is one of the largest transactions that most families will make in their lifetime. So do your research, talk to your friends and family, and be comfortable with the agent you choose to represent you. Sitting down with professionals in the real estate industry and asking many questions will help educate the buyer as what to expect.

BOB RAY'S AMAZING LEGAL COMMERCIAL | Filmmaker Magazine

A few days ago we received an email from Austin filmmaker Bob Ray, best known for shorts such as Hillbilly Doomsday and the documentaries Hell on Wheels and Total Badass.

His message began as follows:

Last week, the criminal defense lawyer who defends Chad Holt in the documentary Total Badass (Adam Reposa, a.k.a. ?Bulletproof,? a.k.a. Repo) asked me to help him make a commercial for his law practice here in Austin. As required by law, we submitted it to the State Bar of Texas for approval.

The legal community in Texas is going crazy with it right now and the vid has been bouncing around D.A. and defense attorney?s offices for the last few days hours. Also, not sure of the repercussions (for Adam, Chad, or, most importantly, for me) if the Bar prohibits the commercial from being used or if we?re breaking any laws?

Getting an email from someone saying that people are going crazy over their video is a pretty common event in this job and always ends in me feeling underwhelmed, but in this case? well, all I can say is, wow!

Check out Ray?s ?Repo? commercial below.

Avoiding sweet rewards at work ? Business Management Daily ...

How do admins avoid temptation at work?

?I?m trying to eat healthy and be more active,? writes one admin. ?But I?m in a sedentary job, and treats often appear.?

With vendors who bring in sweet temptations, birthday cake-filled office celebrations, and a vending machine stocked with goodies, she?s finding it hard to stay healthy.

Other admins shared their tips and strategies on the Admin Pro Forum:

???Tune in to messages from in-house wellness advocates. At the office of admin Amanda, a Health and Wellness Committee sponsors fitness challenges, posts a weekly healthy-eating newsletter and works to revamp the cafeteria?s menu.

The committee?s influence has sparked some departments to hand out granola bars or fruit, instead of candy bars, when giving treats. Birthday celebrations may include cake, but also healthful foods.

Tip: If you don?t have a wellness committee, ask someone in HR about what other resources may exist.

????Lobby to remove vending ma??chines. Another admin, MaryJane, asked management to remove the machines and, thus, the temptation.

???Walk whenever you can, suggests Solana.

???Import your own healthful treats. ?When you get hungry, you?re more likely to eat the first thing you find, which is usually treats your co-workers bring in or anything in the vending machine. When you have your own snacks, you don?t walk around grazing,? offers admin Chris.

???Target birthday celebrations at work. One admin writes that at her office, birthday celebrations took place for every individual?s birthday.

?Now,? she writes, ?we have once-a-month celebrations for everyone having a birthday in that month? that features real food, not just cake. Often her contribution is a big bowl of salad dressing on the side.

???Send a message up. Charlene suggested to management that it stop giving out food baskets as incentive prizes. Management listened. This year?s winners received Kindle e-readers instead.

It?s difficult to believe that you?ll get any luckier than this but it?s coming. Love is on the freeze for another week but this just means it has a chance to breathe and build excitement. A little patience and some wonderful insights rule the beginning of the week.

The Rare Side Effects Of Using Botox | Honest Reviews Online

There are risks associated with any medical procedure. Botox is FDA approved and has been used successfully on over 11 million men and women. As is the case with any medical treatment, there is always the possibility adverse side effects, ranging from mild irritations to severe complications.

There are risks associated with any medical procedure. Botox is FDA approved and has been used successfully on over 11 million men and women. However, as is the case with any medical treatment, there is always the possibility of an adverse side effect, ranging from mild irritations to severe complications, even death.

Botox: What is it?

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected directly into the muscles of the face in order to reduce the overall appearance of fine lines, wrinkles around the eyes and mouth as well as the deeper groves often found on the forehead. It is a simple, relatively painless procedure in which the medicine blocks the nerve impulses to the underlying muscles that cause said wrinkles and lines. Botox produces amazing results. Instant results. Dramatic results.

It is safe. The FDA says so. 11 million satisfied users say so. There is, however, always a risk of side effects and every patient needs to be aware.

Botulism

The medical name for Botox is botulinum toxin. It is the toxin that causes botulism in large enough doses. For this application the dose is miniscule, controlled and harmless. In fact, the toxin is sterilized before injection, meaning that it is no longer living prior to use and the risk of contracting botulism is very low. Medical treatments are readily available to fight botulism, which is most often contracting from eating spoiled, improperly preserved food products. The symptoms to watch out for are:

? Double vision
? Slurred speech
? Difficulty talking
? Difficulty swallowing
? General muscle weakness
? Facial paralysis
? Trouble Walking
? Loss of bladder control
? Trouble breathing

The above symptoms are serious, regardless of the cause, and require immediate medical attention.

What Else Can Happen?

Breathing and swallowing problems can occur if the muscles used in conjunction with breathing and/or swallowing become unintentionally affected by Botox. Other more common side effects that you may experience are:
? Cotton mouth, dry mouth
? Slight discomfort or continued irritation at the site of the injection
? Temporary bruising
? General fatigue
? Neck pain or stiffness
? Dry eyes
? Headache
? Itching
? Wheezing
? Any asthma or asthma-like symptoms
? Dizziness
? Red welts

Who Shouldn?t you Use Botox?

There are a few individuals that shouldn?t use Botox for a variety of reasons. It can be a disappointment, but your overall health is more important. Your physician also has a slew of other products and procedures at their disposal that they can discuss with you in greater depth in person.

You should not use Botox injections if:
? You know that you are allergic to Botox or one of the main ingredients in Botox.
? You have had an adverse allergic reaction to Botox in the past.
? The skin in and around the planned injection site is irritated or infected.
? You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
? You have had Botox within the last four months.
? You have recently taken any prescribed or over-the-counter medication including antibiotics via injection, muscle relaxants, allergy medicine, cold medicine or sleeping medicine.
? You have breathing problems including emphysema and asthma.
? You have swallowing problems.
? You have any disease that affects the muscles and/or nerves. Lou Gehrig?s disease is an example of this.
? You have a history of bleeding problems.
? You have had a previous surgery on your face, for any reason.
? You have any weaknesses in your face, including droopy eyelids or difficulty raising your eyebrows.
? You have any type of surgery scheduled, including dental.
? Any recent sudden or strange changes to your facial appearance.

You should be certain to disclose any and all of the above to your physician before undertaking botox treatments, as well as any reactions you may experience afterward. If you?re one of the rare individuals that suffers botox side effects, there can be serious complications.

'Olympic rings' molecule imaged

Researchers have succeeded in taking a stunning image of a newly synthesised molecule called olympicene.

The molecule - just over a billionth of a metre across - gets its name because its five linked rings resemble the Olympic symbol.

It was first made by collaborators at the University of Warwick in the UK.

They teamed up with IBM researchers, who in 2009 pioneered the technique of single-molecule imaging with its non-contact atomic force microscopy.

London 2012 - One extraordinary year

The team, based at IBM Research Zurich, announced its first success with a molecule called pentacene, five linked hexagonal rings of carbon all in a line.

But it was Professor Graham Richards CBE, former head of Oxford University's chemistry department and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) council, who first conceived of the idea to create a more Olympic-themed molecule along the same lines.

"I was in a committee meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry where we were trying to think of what we could do to mark the Olympics," Prof Richards told BBC News.

"It occurred to me that the molecule that I had drawn looked very much like the Olympic rings, and it had never been made."

University of Warwick researchers Anish Mistry and David Fox undertook the task of developing a chemical recipe for the molecule, and took preliminary images of it using a technique called scanning tunnelling microscopy.

But no approach gives such detailed images of single molecules as non-contact atomic force microscopy, in which a single, even tinier molecule of carbon monoxide is used as a kind of record needle to probe the grooves of molecules with unprecedented resolution.

The images show linked ring structures that are reminiscent both of the Olympic rings and a great many compounds made from rings of carbon atoms, including the "miracle material" graphene.

However, Prof Richards hopes that olympicene's greatest contribution to chemistry is to bring more students into it.

"Molecules of this nature could conceivably have commercial use, but my own feeling is that above all we want to excite an interest in chemistry provoked by the link with the Olympics," he said.

Fulham?s American Ace Eyes Champions League Football

American forward Clint Dempsey has hinted at leaving Fulham this summer, saying he wants to participate in bigger competitions, including the Champions League.

Although the 29 year old forward, who helped the Cottagers finish in ninth in the Premier League this season, said he had some great moments at Craven Cottage, he wanted to move to get exposure at the highest level.

"I am grateful for everything Fulham have done for me, some of the best memories I have in soccer have been there, but the fact remains that I want to play in Champions League. I want to play at the highest level possible," said Dempsey, according to a Guardian?report.

"I want to do as much as I can in my career and look back and say I made the most of all the opportunities I have had. I am always going to want to play in Champions League," The Independent?quoted?the United States forward as saying.

Dempsey's desire to move from Fulham will come as good news for Arsenal who are reportedly targeting the talented American. Dempsey has scored a total of 23 goals (in all competitions) for Fulham this seasom.

Meanwhile, big spending French outfits Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly interested in the American forward but Dempsey said he did not care about baseless rumours unless someone really came forward and made an offer. ?

"I don't get caught up in that [speculation] because until somebody is putting down some money it doesn't matter. If teams are really interested, they need to put their money where their mouth is and make an offer," the Mirror?quoted?Dempsey as saying.

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann hopes Dempsey gets a chance to play in the Champions League with some big club next season. The former German striker, who is busy with his team's preparations for the friendly clash against Scotland on Saturday, feels the American forward deserves to play in the highest level.

"If he has the opportunity to go to a Champions League team, that's the cr?me de la cr?me of club soccer then you have to do that, with all the respect obviously to Fulham, as he often mentions. But you want to play in the biggest club competition in the world and that's the European Champions League and hopefully something will happen over the next couple of weeks," Reuters?reported?Klinsmann as saying.

Meanwhile, Fulham boss Martin Jol feels his side can be even better next season provided they keep their best players, including Dempsey.

"If all the players are still there, I believe we can do even better," said Jol, according to an Espnstar?report.

Africa and Australasia to host biggest radio telescope ever built - Indiatalkies.com

London, May 26: South Africa, Australia and New Zealand have decided to host the biggest radio telescope ever built that will sweep the sky for answers to the major outstanding questions in astronomy.

The nations belonging to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) organisation took the decision at a meeting on Friday.

The 1.5bn-euro SKA?s huge fields of antennas will probe the early Universe, test Einstein?s theory of gravity and even search for alien intelligent life, the BBC repoted.

The project aims to produce a radio telescope with a combined collecting area of one million square metres ? equivalent to about 200 football pitches.

To do this, it will have to combine the signals received by thousands of small antennas spread over thousands of kilometres.

South Africa and Australasia had put forward separate, competing bids, and the early indications had been that there would be one outright winner.

The SKA will have 3,000 antennas across a vast semi-desert part of South Africa known as the Karoo. The site is already home to seven massive Gregorian dish antennas that form part of the Karoo Array Telescope, or Kat7.

South Africa is also pressing ahead with a 64-dish project, Meerkat, which is a precursor to SKA.

Professor Justin Jonas, a director of the SKA project in South Africa, says hosting two-thirds of the telescope still means hosting the largest telescope in the world.

But the SKA organisation decided both proposals should contribute something to the final design of the telescope.

?We have decided on a dual site approach,? said SKA board chairman Prof John Womersley while speaking at a news conference held at Amsterdam?s Schiphol Airport following a meeting of the organisation?s members in the Dutch capital.

The decision to use two sites will undoubtedly increase the cost and complexity of the SKA.

Its targets will be radio sources in the sky that radiate at centimetre to metre wavelengths.

These include the clouds of hydrogen gas in the infant Universe that collapsed to form the very first stars and galaxies.

The SKA will map precisely the positions of the nearest billion galaxies. The structure they trace on the cosmos should reveal new details about ?dark energy?, the mysterious negative pressure that appears to be pushing the Universe apart at an ever-increasing speed.

The telescope will also detail the influence of magnetic fields on the development of stars and galaxies. And it will zoom in on pulsars, the dead stars that emit beams of radio waves that sweep across the Earth like super-accurate time signals.

Astronomers believe these dense objects may hold the key to a more complete theory of gravity than that proposed by Einstein.

And Australia and South Africa had even started building precursor facilities, which they hoped would enhance their bids? attractiveness.

Both these pathfinders, known as ASKAP (Australia) and Meerkat (South Africa), will now be incorporated into the early development of the network.

Most of the subsequent telescope dishes and mid-frequency aperture arrays will then be built in southern Africa (sites will include Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, and even out into the Indian Ocean in Mauritius and Madagascar) ? the bulk of the SKA.

The low-frequency aperture array antennas will be positioned in Australia.

?What the SKA project has decided is to put different technologies in different places, playing to the strengths of each sit,? said Prof Bryan Gaensler, from Sydney University and a former project scientist on the SKA.

And Prof Womersley told BBC News: ?The important aspect of doing it this way is that we will get more science out of the project in the first phase by taking advantage of the existing ASKAP and Meerkat investments. So, while there?ll be some additional operating costs associated with this implementation, we will get more science in return.? (ANI)

Tornado plows through Greeley, Windsor; one dead

This story was originally published in The Denver Post on May 23, 2008

WINDSOR ? A tornado dropped from roiling skies over Weld County around midday on Thursday, shredding portions of the towns of Windsor and Greeley with fury that measured nearly a mile wide and left one person dead.

The twister, accompanied by hail approaching baseball size, caused multiple crashes and some injuries on area roads and rolled several semis off U.S. 85 north of Gilcrest.

The lone death was a male camper at a trailer park outside Greeley, according to the Weld County coroner. He was identified as Oscar "Mike" Manchester, 52.

The large tornado, one of several to develop north of Denver on Thursday, plowed northwest from Gilcrest to Windsor, ravaging farms, lumberyards, commercial areas, trailers, a day care and at least 60 homes along a 35-mile path.

Moving at a 30-mph clip, it tugged down power lines, toppled trucks and cattle cars, derailed part of a train, and

hurled wood and metal bits of roof up to 200 yards.

Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych tracked the tornado as it struck the city and churned buildings to shambles, with winds perhaps whipping up to 200 mph.

"You've heard of tornadoes that hit the ground and then go back into the clouds," Tymkowych said. "This one, it just sat on the ground, and it kept going and going."

He said the twister struck the west edge of Evans and advanced to Greeley's western outskirts, where it slammed into the headquarters of Swift & Co. and the regional headquarters for State Farm Insurance.

The tornado caused heavy damage to the roofs of both buildings, blew out windows and mangled cars in the parking lots. From there, the swirling winds ravaged Missile Silo Park, overturning several trailers and killing a camper, Tymkowych said.

Dwight Smidt pointed to a trailer blown 50 yards from its parking spot, where he said a Vietnam veteran he had just met may have died in the storm.

The twister "picked it up and smashed it to the ground. It ripped the whole top of it off," Smidt said. "It ripped the carpet right off the floor. All these parts, way out there" - he pointed into a field - "were part of the trailer." Other trailers from the park were ripped from foundations and blown into a row of fir trees, but the nearby Kodak plant appeared to sustain only a power outage and minor damage.

Bearing down on Windsor

Then the storm bore down on Windsor.

Bob Groke was working at Signature Bank when rain and hail started drumming the area.

"We could see just really pitchblack sky, and the clouds started to circulate," he said. "It was huge and it was close."

Everything turned calm for a few minutes, and about a dozen people at the bank strategized that they would seek protection inside the vault should the weather turn bad again.

Quickly, it did.

"We just got into the vault when the windows on the doors blew out," Groke said. "But we were safe."

Across the street, kids from a nearby day-care center waited out the tornado inside their classrooms, then took refuge inside the vault at Bank of Choice when they heard more tornadoes were possible.

their sides in a smashed-up subdivision and across tombstones in a cemetery. A rusty red boxcar lay sideways along the railway. Just to the north, 14 black rail tankers were littered with lumber.

The wind scattered the neat white fencing at a nearby horse farm and beat a smart new mansion under construction back into the dirt.

Random destruction

homes stood relatively unscathed, cars neatly parked in driveways by clipped green lawns that stayed clean. While news helicopters and the governor's entourage flew overhead, traffic flowed smoothly on many streets, and parents picked up their children from school.

By late afternoon, Windsor blocks were buzzing with the sound of chainsaws and wood chippers, as neighbors gathered on lawns for cleanup detail and to trade stories about the day.

Casey Arnett, 33, surveyed the damage to a house he had been fixing up and renting out. The storm had punched huge holes in the room, and "it slid the whole body of the house about 6 inches," Arnett said.

The renter would have to leave, Arnett said. The garage is in a nearby lake.

farm about a half-mile from Missile Silo Park, shards of corrugated metal were all that remainedof a barn, while dead calves littered the road nearby.

Elier Dominguez, 24, stood with blood on his chin, where blowing glass had hit him, and a bruise on his thigh from hail.

The wind had thrown his trailer about 50 yards from its moorings.

His wife, 23-year-old Ilde, and son Johnathan, 3, rummaged the field for clothes, toys and any other family possessions scattered but spared by the tornado.

"Everything I owned was in that mobile home, and it's gone," he said."Now we're looking for clothes to wear."

Ilde had been in the trailer when they first spotted the twister. She picked up her son and ran to a concrete dairy building

for safety. Ilde looked back just before reaching the shelter.

The trailer was gone.

Winds devastated the livestock as well. About 20 mature cows and 40 to 50 calves ? out of the dairy operation's 250 animals ? died as a result of the tornado, said farmworker Larry Dehaan. Some of the injured livestock had to be shot.

"We can't even find them all," he said.

A state of emergency

Gov. Bill Ritter, who toured the damage by air in the afternoon, declared a state of emergency and called out the Colorado National Guard.

"We will be doing all we can to assist the people of Weld County as we assess the damage and determine how the state can provide the most effective aid," Ritter said in a news release. "My heart goes out to the people of Weld County during this very dangerous time."

In the Old Town section of Windsor, some homeowners were told late in the day they might need to evacuate the neighborhood because of safety hazards. Cranes lifted portions of roofs off damaged houses.

Volunteers walked the neighborhood asking homeowners if they needed help boarding up windows or placing tarps over roof holes. Josh Roloff works with Restoration Now, a nonprofit group out of Fort Collins that, on a typical day, assists low-income people with repairs.

"We're making sure people are dry in their homes," Roloff said.

Rain and golf-ball to quarter-sized hail pelted the area as prelude to the devastation.

A funnel cloud was spotted over Loveland's southwest edge about 12:45 p.m., according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Others were reported at the Fort Collins Emergency Operations Center and Fossil Creek Reservoir and north of Wellington, while 60 mph winds and quartersized hail hammered Buckhorn Mountain. Another tornado touched down near Dacono, and yet another did damage near Laramie.

Schools locked down

Schools in affected areas were put on lockdown.

Harrowing reports flowed in to authorities.

The North Metro Fire Protection District fielded a call about 12:30 p.m. of a "microburst or possible tornado" near the intersection Weld County Road 11 and Weld County Road 6.

A fifth-wheel trailer flipped over, trapping a man who was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Five outbuildings were leveled, one home was damaged and metal fencing was destroyed, said North Metro spokesperson Wendy Forbes.

Residents in one home near Weld County Road 54 were trapped inside by a fallen tree, and a home east of Interstate 25 on Weld County Road 6 appeared to have been hit, said Larimer County sheriff's spokesperson Eloise Campanella.

Colorado State Trooper Ryan Sullivan said the tornado caused multiple crashes and multiple injuries on highwaysinWeld County. Colorado 60 and U.S. 85 closed as the State Patrol and emergency crews helped motorists.

Seven people were admitted to Medical Center of the Rockies with injuries, but their conditions weren't available, said spokesman Gary Kimsey. Poudre Valley Hospital, which is part of the same hospital system, also received patients.

Both facilities moved patients into hallways as a safety precaution from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. as the storm moved through. Poudre Valley Hospital also moved about 200 nonmedical personnel and visitors into the basement.

Red Cross sets up shelters

The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Windsor Community Center, 250 11th St., and its Denver chapter sent people and supplies to help the Fort Collins chapter.

Larimer County spokeswoman Deni La Rue said The Ranch ? which encompasses the Budweiser Events Center & Fairgrounds ? canceled all Thursday night events and prepared 200 meals to help the Red Cross.

Xcel Energy spokesman Mark Stutz said the tornado damaged three power transmission lines, including a pair of 230,000-volt lines at the utility's Fort St. Vrain power plant near Platteville.

As many as 60,000 customers lost service as the storm passed through, Stutz said. About a third of those had service restored by midafternoon, but customers in Platteville, Greeley, Milliken, Windsor and elsewhere remained without power.

"This is some of the more significant weather damage we've had in many years," Stutz said. "I imagine this will be a several-day event for us."

A Qwest crew is on site assessing the damage to its services in the affected areas, said spokeswoman Jennifer Barton.

Staff writers Kirk Mitchell, Michael Booth, Kieran Nicholson, Bruce Finley, Carlos Illescas, Mike McPhee, Katy Human, Cynthia Pasquale, Vikki Migoya and Andy Voung contributed to this report.

Times-Picayune to cut paper to 3 days a week

(AP) ? The Times-Picayune, one of the nation's oldest newspapers, will no longer offer print editions seven days a week and instead plans to offer three printed issues a week starting in the fall. The change means New Orleans would become the largest metro area in the nation without a daily newspaper in the digital age.

The changes announced Thursday were combined with similar moves at three major Alabama daily newspapers also owned by the Newhouse family group's Advance Publications. The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The Huntsville Times will switch to publishing three days a week as part of a new focus on online news. At all four papers, there will be unspecified staff cuts. All four papers will continue to publish continuously on their websites, and online access will remain free.

Newspapers have struggled in recent years as consumers increasingly get their news online. Print advertising declined as the economy went into recession, and newspapers have yet to learn how to make online advertising as profitable as its printed counterpart.

"For us, this isn't about print versus digital, this is about creating a very successful multi-platform media company that addresses the ever-changing needs of our readers, our online users and our advertisers," said Advance Publications' president of local digital strategy, Randy Siegel, in an interview with The Associated Press. "This change is not easy, but it's essential for us to remain relevant."

Siegel didn't say how much money the reduced print runs in Louisiana and Alabama would save, nor how many staff members would be laid off or hired in the new online units.

"To get good quality information is not cheap," said Jennifer Greer, chair of the journalism department at the University of Alabama. "What you are seeing is people trying to figure out a business model that works in a digital age."

The decision was met with sadness by some residents in New Orleans, where The Times-Picayune won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Staffers continued reporting despite being forced out of the newspaper's offices amid widespread flooding and power outages.

The storm drove away thousands of residents, some of whom never came back. The city ? and its newspaper ? struggled to recover in the years since.

The paper was a lifeline for the Southern, working-class city, providing government announcements, obituaries, Carnival and scoops on local corruption, said Cheron Brylski, a 53-year-old New Orleans-based political consultant. Not having the paper every day is like losing a sports team, she said.

"Where is New Orleans headed since Katrina? This is not something that helps our recovery," she said.

The papers in Alabama also have long histories. The Mobile paper has published every day for nearly two centuries ? the masthead has long billed it as the state's oldest, in print since 1813. And in 2007, the Birmingham News won a Pulitzer Prize for a series on corruption in Alabama's two-year college system.

Birmingham News employees were told during morning meetings that longtime Editor Tom Scarritt will retire this fall when the new companies are created, according to two reporters who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the changes for the company.

In New Orleans, a new company, the NOLA Media Group, would be created to oversee both The Times-Picayune and its affiliated website, NOLA.com.

The announcements mirror changes Advance Publications made in Michigan. In 2009, the company shut the Ann Arbor News but created AnnArbor.com, a news website that still publishes print editions on Thursday and Sunday.

In February, it launched the MLive Media Group, which runs MLive.com, to focus its efforts in Michigan digitally. Meanwhile, all of its eight other newspapers in the state offer three days of home delivery with newsstand sales from three to seven days a week.

Newspaper analyst Ken Doctor, who writes the Newsonomics blog, said the company is trying to hold on to declining print ad revenue for a few more years, and expects Advance to eventually cut print runs at its other newspapers in New Jersey, Oregon, Ohio and elsewhere. The company owns The Oregonian in Portland, Ore.; The Plain Dealer in Cleveland; and The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J.

"It's a big bet to retain profitability and hope that in the shock therapy, there are profits on the other end," he said.

Print circulation has been dropping steadily over the years at the four newspapers affected by Thursday's announcement, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. On average, the four papers' circulation in the half year through March fell about 6 percent from a year ago.

Nonetheless, the Times-Picayune remains one of the nation's most successful newspapers. Of the top 50 large-sized markets, the newspaper has the highest rate of readership of its daily edition in the U.S., according to Austin, Texas-based Scarborough Research, a firm that tracks the industry.

The Times-Picayune's average paid circulation was 133,557 in the six months through March, down 49 percent compared to March 2005, a few months before Hurricane Katrina hit.

The Birmingham News' circulation of 103,729 is down 29 percent from five years ago; the Press-Register's of 82,088 is down 18 percent; and The Huntsville Times' of 44,725 is down 15 percent.

Die-hard supporters and even Mayor Mitch Landrieu pledged to make sure the newspaper remained a part of New Orleans culture.

"Through wars and floods, the 'Aints and a Saints Super Bowl victory, the TP has been and remains an integral part of our daily routine and our culture," Landrieu said.

Anne Milling, a longtime member of the advisory board to The Times-Picayune, said an online-focused model wouldn't work in New Orleans. She said she and other supporters were exploring bringing in new owners committed to a daily paper, or even starting a new daily publication.

"We always do things differently," she said. "It's part of our tradition: You wake up with a cup of chicory coffee and read the newspaper."

Lasik Vision Lighting Up Lives

The health of our eyes should be our main concern, to avoid diminishing vision. Glasses to correct vision have been used through ages, and are still is popular as it is hassle free compared to contact lens fitting, which needs extra care.
Contact lens fitting has various steps to go through; firstly the condition of the eyes should be in accordance to the rules to be followed before putting on the lenses, secondly; Allergies and dryness in the eyes will result in deteriorating your ocular health. These details have to be kept in mind before switching to contact lenses.

Lasik vision corrective surgeries have now become immensely popular as people are coming to know of this latest technology. There are several types of lasik vision corrective surgeries that differ from each other very minimally.

Invented in the eighties, PRK or photose fractive keratectomy was the Lasik vision correction that was then the first use of the technology.

Though lasik is similar to PRK in many ways, its procedure comprises of exposing a deeper layer of cornea. This can result in delayed improvement and recuperation.

A flap using a microkerotome is made at the front of the eye in the Lasik vision correction but with PRK the outer layer of cornea is removed by the laser. This is one prominent difference between Lasik and PRK.

Lasik technology has further been used in other type of Lasik vision correction like custom Lasik, wave front Lasik and wave front guided Lasik. Custom Lasik is a procedure through which the laser is used to correct any irregularities by following the 3D map created to show the eye processing the image and how well it is doing it.

This method of Lasik vision correction brings out sharper vision and not as risky as the Lasik procedure used earlier.

Some improvements in procedure and technology is seen in the epi-Lasik type of Lasik vision correction. Here a epithelial separator-a blunt plastic tool is used to remove the flap instead of alcohol used in some laser vision corrective surgeries which can kill the epithelial cells.

In Lasek a very fine blade called a trephine is used to cut the flap and then alcohol solution is applied for an easier flap removal. Intralace Lasik is a type of Lasik vision correction that is a blade free method.

Two lasers are used in which one laser is used to create the flap and the other laser, meanwhile is used to reshape the cornea to correct the vision unlike the traditional Lasik in which a microkerotome is applied to create a flap in the cornea and then a cold beam laser reshapes the cornea to better the vision.

Patients with balanced and controlled systemic diseases can adhere effectively to this technology of Lasik vision correction. The other advantages are that one need not use contact lens fitting and glasses that sometimes can cause discomfort. Yet there are people of the opinion that glasses are the best options when it comes to taking care of the eye.
