Catelynn Lowell Touts Weight Loss in New Twitpic

Guess it's pretty obvious Catelynn Lowell is not pregnant.

In a recent Twitter photo, the Teen Mom star showed that she's shed 22 pounds since she joined Weight Watchers last summer, and she's not done yet!

"I was more than 165 pounds, which is so gross!" the 5-foot-2 reality star admitted. "Now I'm 144. I only have 20 more to lose until I'm at my goal."

Check out the photo of her new, thinner frame below:

The bride-to-be says she'll fit in her dream wedding dress, too: "I put it on and started bawling. I knew that was it. I love it and can't wait to wear it!"

During the Teen Mom season premiere, she tweeted, "I can't believe how much weight I have lost watching this makes me want to lose way more!"

And her fiance Tyler Baltierra, 20, makes for a good workout partner. The MTV stars hit the gym three times a week, and he's her biggest fan!

Baltierra also Tweeted his support for her weight loss, writing, "Cate has lost so much weight, I never even noticed before! Good job babe."

With a photo, he said, "See her now! Freaking love her."

Aww. One thing they don't freaking love is the rumors that they're having another baby. Apparently Cate's mom impersonated her and told a tabloid.

Thoughts Towards a Better World ? Blog Archive ? #587 ? Dick ...

Dick and Barbara Bernard as Godparents, March, 1965, four months before Barbara's death.

I?m publishing this a few hours before the Big Release of the Supreme Court decision on what has come to be known as ?Obamacare?.

I have no prediction.

All I know is the reality, learned at too young an age, about what it means to be desperately ill and uninsured.

Perhaps someone will read this, and get the message and maybe even change their mind about ?Obamacare? (which I deliberately choose to label ?Obama cares? in the headline.)

Forty-nine years ago, in mid-October of 1963, fresh out of the U.S. Army, I began teaching school in a small school district in northern Minnesota. Medical Insurance, then, was strictly an elective affair. You wanted it, you got it on your own, and you paid for it.

I was 23 years old. I signed up for doctor but not hospital insurance.

My new wife was even younger than I, also a first year teacher in another school district.

Two weeks after I started teaching, Barbara, already feeling ill, went to see the doctor (a few miles north, in Canada), found out that her kidneys were not working right. She had to resign from teaching two months into her contract. She was pregnant. We began a new unplanned-for life.

Three weeks later, President Kennedy was assassinated.

Those years you couldn?t say ?Time out. I think I?ll take some of that hospital insurance now.? Besides, her kidney condition was ?pre-existing?.

We struggled on through almost two years of hell.

There is no heroic way to describe it. We just plodded on through it. At the end of May, 1965, she collapsed in a coma at home. She left our town in an ambulance to Bismarck ND; then, in a few days, on to Minneapolis.

At University Hospital they admitted a non-resident patient with no insurance and no ability to pay.

And on July 24, 1965, in Minneapolis, far away from our North Dakota home, Barbara died at University Hospital, not living long enough to receive a kidney transplant, a procedure then in its infancy.

July 29, 1965, on a blustery hilltop in Valley City ND, Barbara was laid to rest. Son Tom, one, was there, as were friends and family.

I came back to the Twin Cities to start the new job I?d received three days before she died. In the fall, as I was preparing to file for bankruptcy, North Dakota Public Welfare came through and paid most of the major medical expense we had incurred. Our bills, while equivalent to over two years of my then-salary, were minuscule compared to today.

My son and I lived with a kind family who provided babysitting for my son, and a room for me, and I worked much of that first year at two jobs. And ultimately survived.

It wasn?t until many years later that I learned that the day after my wife was buried, July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare Act into Law. Now, 47 years later, I have a certain amount of seniority in the wonderful Medicare program.

And we wait for a ruling, momentarily, where some people are hoping that ?Obamacare? will be tossed on the trash heap, and the health safety net, complicated enough as it is, will be made even more fragile.

For years I?ve heard all the arguments about why there shouldn?t be some significant version of National Health. Lately I?ve had to endure a TV ad of some supposed family physician lamenting the evil of Obamacare: that some of her patients might not be able to have their appointments with her anymore; and further asserting, without any supportive data, that Obamacare will drive up health care costs even more.

And I think back to those years of 1963-65, when I was in my twenties, and my wife was dying without insurance, and we were broke.

Whatever happens with the Supreme Court today, the reality will remain, for me, that everybody in this wealthy nation of ours deserves the best in education and health care, regardless of their means.

I?ll be interested in the ruling today?.

Bethany Susan: Thankful Thursday: Magic Hour

Full to the brim with thankfulness tonight, folks!

~I spent all afternoon in the sunshine with a fabulous friend on a new-to-both-of-us hike.

~This song is playing right now.

~And other songs like it were playing when we stopped on the way home for spontaneous Mexican food (and Kristi's first 'real' rolled tacos in San Diego!)

~K-Dub took me to the market, where I got peaches, which I intend to turn into a delectable tart.

~She also gave me a TON of fresh produce from the farm she interns at! Not only local and natural, but grown with love! Cucumbers, lettuce, beans, squash... Score!

~My town was absolutely gorgeous for magic hour tonight. The pink hazy sky, the perfect temperature of air that caresses your skin, the purple Jacaranda petals floating gently down and covering everything...

~I'm always talking about how much I love challenge, and I'm taking on a BIG new one with work. With more (even bigger ones) to come. I'm going to thrive!

~My family is going through a rough patch right now. It's reminding me that we all still have each other no matter what, and that sometimes rough patches hide the best stuff just under the surface.

~I've designed a new workout routine that I'm hoping will hold me accountable for being active no matter how long my work days are. Here's to feeling fabulous and having lots of energy!

~I'm going to Santa Cruz in a month to celebrate the wedding of two of the most awesome peeps I know.

~I'm going to Florida in October to visit my wifey at school!

~I've been experimenting away with food and drink recipes lately. The one pictured above is from this lovely site, and it even in a non-slushy form it was delicious!

~I watched another friend perform some standup comedy last night.. along with a ton of other comedians. Laughter is so good for the soul!

AngelList Has Transformed Seed Investing ? Are Recruiters and ...

Last week Naval Ravikant went to an industry dinner. He asked a friend in the venture business how things were going. The friend slumped over in his chair, shrugged sadly and said, ?The business is becoming commoditized.?

It?s an extreme interpretation, and not everyone shares it. Times have never been better for a handful of firms who are rolling in the returns, raising as much from LPs as they want and still doing business the way they always have.

But matters have also never been more polarized for the VC-haves and have-nots, and this sad-sack VC has a few people to blame. Chief among them is his friend Ravikant, whose site AngelList has dragged the stealthy, back-room world of venture capital kicking and screaming into the light ? something many industry watchers never thought could be done.

And now, AngelList is doing the same thing it did to VCs to recruiters. But we?ll get to that in a minute.

People have wanted to dismiss the potential of AngelList ever since it launched. At first, people said only loser companies would want to share data and telegraph fundraising plans so publicly. Then VCs said they?d never invest in something that didn?t come through traditional channels. Other VCs said they?d never do something as banal as leaving ?comments? on a company?s profile. They?d have those conversations privately or not at all.

But the AngelList juggernaut has steamrolled right through those objections. And now, it?s not even just about seed deals. Yesterday, we wrote about the first large Series A completed on the site, when Rally raised a remarkable $7.9 million round.

The important thing about the Rally deal: This was a Valley company with two big leads in Floodgate and Greylock. It could have done the round the traditional route, but chose AngelList instead. This is the thing: AngelList is not about everyone being able to raise money or everyone being able to call themselves an angel. It?s about the very best companies actually choosing to operate out in an open platform. The image that so many people hoped for ? that AngelList would only be the trolling ground for the desperate, for the unconnected ? just hasn?t proven true.

And that?s exactly what some people find so scary about it.

In the case of Rally, Ravikant argues the referrals from AngelList converted at a much higher rate than emails existing investors sent, because the social niceties were stripped out of the transaction. Put another way: If an investor on AngelList signals interest, they are truly interested. If a friend of Mike Maples says, ?Ok, I?ll take a look, Mike,? he may just be being polite.

What?s scary about AngelList is it strikes at the heart of what VCs have held dear for decades: Proprietary deal flow. ?The Holy Grail is finding a company before anyone else,? Ravikant says. ?That is disappearing. The idea that you are the only investor to see this deal is highly, highly, highly, highly unlikely.? (That?s four highlys, if anyone was counting.)

It?s hard to overstate how terrifying that idea is for the Valley establishment. Partners are hired because they have proprietary deal flow. VCs sell that to LPs as the reason to invest in them, not the VC next door. The desire for more of it is why we recently discovered that venture firms were paying entrepreneurs to secretly invest on their behalf.

Everyone wants to know about the hot new deal before anyone else. That?s how you make your money in the venture business. And AngelList and Ravikant are standing on a hill screaming that the Web, tech blogs, and sophisticated entrepreneurs have destroyed the idea of proprietary deal flow forever.?Pour the sad sack VC at dinner another drink.?For most of the Sand Hill Road, that is very, very bad news. And, whether fans of AngelList or not, most will still tell you it?s flat out not true, that deal flow is still very much alive and kicking.

Still, you can?t deny AngelList?s burgeoning power. While uncomfortable and threatening for some, it has caused a full-on stampede on the site. We use AngelList to provide widgets at the end of our stories, and it?s hard to find a new startup, no matter how nascent, that doesn?t have a profile on the site already. Globally, angels are fighting to get listed.

It?s significantly harder to invest via AngelList than it was to buy secondary shares in Facebook. Not only do you have to be an accredited investor, but AngelList has to verify that at least two investments you?ve made were pure cash investments. Someone else in the community has to approve you. And even then, you are on probationary status. There are 3,500 angels on the site, which sounds like a lot, until you realize there are more than 20,000 applications in the system.

Here?s the thing: Those 20,000 likely aren?t getting in. At least not any time soon. ?We stopped going through the inbox,? Ravikant confesses. It?s just too hard to process manually, and they are working on a better way to process the ever-growing queue of hopeful names. ?The only way someone gets ahead now is if someone I know emails me and says they should be added as an investor,? he says.

The caution signals that even Ravikant is a little scared of the power of what he has built. When we talked about the millions in cash thrown at Rally over his platform, he could have strutted around bragging about the power of AngelList, lobbing smug told-you-so?s at the haters. He didn?t. He repeated this several times instead: ?I hope they make their investors money.? That?s how he knows he?s really done something here.

Ravikant emphasizes repeatedly that AngelList isn?t a king maker. At best, it?s a king-enabler. It can only help great companies; it can?t make a shitty company great. ?We get 100 company profiles created every day,? he says. ?There aren?t 100 companies that get funded every day. Just like YC and Harvard, the 1 percent are the ones that do well. The next 2 to 3 percent do okay. We can?t make an unfinanceable company financeable.?

?This is the biggest misconception,? he continues. ?People put up this tiny, little profile saying they?ll be the best food recipe site on the planet, with no data or information and later they?re complaining on Twitter that AngelList didn?t work. You have to put a lot of information up there; a lot of companies aren?t comfortable with that.?

Ravikant takes who does what on his platform very seriously. He doesn?t want it to be an example of some wild 2010s-era exuberance that people point to a decade from now, the way everyone mocked Draper Fisher Jurvetson?s failed ?meVC? fund after the dot com crash. He doesn?t want this to end in tears. He doesn?t want this to be a flash in the pan. He wants this to change the way the venture business works, for the better, forever.

?This is fun, but it is moving very, very fast,? Ravikant says. ?VCs invest over four year cycles with ten year vesting cycles. Look at how much the business has changed in the last three to four years.?

He tells me about a startup who is raising money now, with a flood of recently minted Facebook money anchoring the deal. ?When they told me the price, I almost fell out of my chair,? he says. ?There?s a lot of recycling of capital going on. There?s a lot of madness in this market.?

Ravikant has long said he has a big vision for AngelList, but won?t talk much more about what that is. But eagle-eyed startups may have noticed another part recently: a talent vertical. Go here to see it. Rather than operating like a normal job board, it matches people who failed to raise money or whose startup didn?t work out with companies that have yet to raise money.

It?s an ingenious approach, and true to AngelList?s savvy use of technology to shortcut real-world inefficiencies. Most startups who can?t find talent complain that too many people are starting their own companies, and that drains the market of would be CTOs and VPs. AngelList finds the ones that don?t quite work and efficiently feeds that talent back into the system.

And it seems to be working.

These days, AngelList is facilitating some 200 mutual introductions per week between startups and investors. It?s taken years to get to that velocity. But in just the last two weeks, the talent vertical ? which AngelList never announced and almost no one has written about ? is doing 600 mutual introductions a week between talent and startups looking for talent. ?It?s already three times the velocity of the fundraising side of the company,? Ravikant says.

Holy. Shit. If you thought finding funding was a challenge for startups, AngelList has struck at the motherload of startup angst by taking on the war for talent. This could cause an even bigger impact in the startup world.

Of course, those are my words, not Ravikant?s. He shrugs, ?We?re just a tool in the tool belt. Hopefully the best. But just one tool.?

(I should disclose that I met Ravikant, when PandoDaily first launched, to talk about partnering up to provide widgets on our stories. There?s no financial relationship between the companies, and there?s no information they give us that you can?t get on the site itself. But we clicked immediately, because we were both underdogs trying to bring this industry into the light, and both have a very long term view. He?s agreed to be our guest at PandoMonthly in November where he?s promised to share much more about AngelList?s big vision. It should be a good one.)

RES Releases FREE Baseline Desktop Analyzer in Windows Azure Marketplace

RES Software, the recognised leader in dynamic desktop solutions, today announced the publication of RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer in the Windows Azure Marketplace. RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer is a free, online service on Microsoft Corp.?s Windows Azure that allows IT architects and desktop administrators to quickly gain visibility into their desktop infrastructures through a rich analysis of user context and desktop usage. This availability will allow IT administrators to register for this RES Software service directly from the Windows Azure site.

The Windows Azure Marketplace serves as an online market for buying and selling finished SaaS applications and premium datasets. It helps connect companies seeking innovative cloud-based solutions with partners that have developed solutions that are ready to use. In order to be accepted onto the marketplace, Microsoft analyses and tests all offerings to ensure that they comply with Windows Azure?s security, billing, auditing, and authentication requirements. ?Administrators have the ability to discover, try and buy applications built on Windows Azure and purchase them via a single trusted source.?

?The Windows Azure marketplace is a great online resource for customers and partners to buy and sell finished Software as a Service (SaaS),? said Max Uritsky, Group Program Manager Windows Azure Marketplace, Microsoft Corp. ?We are excited to have RES Software offer RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer on the Windows Azure Marketplace and help connect customers seeking innovative cloud based solutions with this ready to use solution.?

RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer is a service based on Windows Azure that provides IT with a better understanding of what exists in their environment and what is really used, including applications, printers, data sources, hardware and more. This analysis goes above and beyond traditional static inventory services. The lightweight solution requires no agent or back-end configuration and is easy to deploy. RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer reports are analysed through scalable Windows Azure services, and equip organisations with the essential information to make critical decisions about their desktop modernisation initiatives, including application virtualisation (App-V), Windows 7 migrations, and desktop virtualisation.

?Microsoft?s inclusion of RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer in the Windows Azure Marketplace serves as an outstanding proof-point for the product?s critical capabilities for IT administrators,? said Gene Bonacci, RES Software Vice President Channels and Strategic Alliances. ?As organisations prepare to embrace and manage the hybrid workspace, RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer provides key materials to streamline the planning and deployment of IT projects that might otherwise disrupt operations regardless of user environment management and personalisation platforms.?

With the in-depth information provided by RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer, IT departments will be better equipped to make decisions on how to introduce new hardware, plan for virtualisation adoption and the deployment of operating systems and applications with minimal end user disruption. They can also quickly evaluate methods of improving IT efficiency, such as determining if they are over-spending on unused licenses or seeing how much and what types of data users are storing on Dropbox.?

RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer can be found in the Applications portion of the Windows Azure Marketplace, and it fully integrates with RES Workspace Manager, so organisations looking to move forward with desktop transformation projects can stream the data captured by the analysis into Workspace Manager.?

See RES Baseline Desktop Analyzer in action at Microsoft TechEd Europe this week at the RES Software booth, S10. ??

How to Choose a Car audio and video Brain Device | Buy Hawaiian ...

Top 10 Car Audio & Video Stereo Amplifiers

There are so many different audio head units available these days that making an informed decision on which one to buy is a long process. I happen to know that about 99% of people have the same goals:

1. Get a unit with all of the best features.

2. Save money on that unit.

You?re in luck, because that?s what this guide is all about!

A quick note about HYPE:

There are lots of retailers and parties on the internet that would like you to believe certain things about car audio.

What?s amounts to is the fact that these individuals truly just want to sell a person something, and take some of one?s $$$ together. When selecting stereo products, it is best to rely on the advice of fairly neutral parties instead of retailers and internet marketers. Do not fall under the actual lure of information pollution!
OK, then.
Whenever you buy a head unit, essentially you are looking for the control method for the entire stereo. You ought to be certain whatever unit you get can handle all of the tasks you want your unit to deal with. The main things to consider:
Will i want a Compact disc changer?
Will i want to connect my iPod (or any other Audio gadget)?
Will i require to use satellite radio?
Will i want any type of mobile video clip?
Will i need any kind of EQ/DSP/Time a static correction features?
Will i want to focus on Quality of sound or perhaps SPL?
Will i wish to be capable of play Audio or any other electronic music files?
Will i want to connect amps? If that?s the case, the amount of?
The amount of the stereo system should i develop surrounding this head unit?
There are probably other things that you will want to think about as well, however these are just a handful of ideas to get a head going.
Once you?ve chosen all of this stuff, you can begin consolidating straight down your head unit checklist. The next thing you?ll want to carry out will be examine all of the specifications, and see just what unit is the best selection. If you wish to examine a list of head unit specifications, take a look at my post known as Head Device Specs, and the way These people Affect An individual.
A fast notice concerning specifications: Some individuals obtain truly obsessed with locating a unit in which somehow like magic has got the very best specifications. I mean that individuals look for units that doesn?t just have the greatest s/n ratio, but the lowest THD, one of the most features, the greatest tad DAC, and so on. and so on. Today! I?ll claim that the majority of units from the leading suppliers are fantastic sufficient to form the cornerstone of a high-end stereo system. In fact several specifications are measured by way of a personal computer, and humans can not truly perceive the actual variations among .03% and .05% THD. Therefore, don?t get worried about it! If you find a unit that has all of the features you will need, and has appropriate overall performance, just buy it! Just like many individuals have got mentioned just before me: ?Don?t perspire the tiny stuff?. Compromising on a single little standards won?t make your music appear bad.
Therefore, you may be quite near to creating a great selection on the very best head unit for the car. Right now, you have to examine some more issues:
Price range : Just how much are you able to devote?
Construction : How good created is the unit?
Warranty : Will the system come with a good warranty?
Obviously, many of these factors means a lot more for some people than the others. That is OK! Here?s your head unit, and in the end, the aim is to find the most effective unit that meets your entire wants.

Google Play web updated, now allows for updating and uninstalling of apps

Google Play

In addition to all the other goodies Google rolled out thus far at Google IO 2012 they updated the online version of the Google Play Store with some pretty awesome features. So awesome in fact, that I'm rather perplexed as to why it was never mentioned. As you can see in the screenshot, you can uninstall and even update apps all from the site itself. Plus, any devices associated to your account will now also show an image representing that phone, tablet or Google TV. Sadly, you still can't get rid of apps you no longer use from the listing but we're getting to that point with the latest additions.

Thanks, waltesefalcon!

Why You Should Use A Concrete Driveway Sealer For Your Home

While it may be a fact that concrete and asphalt are already very durable materials, you can always add a layer of driveway sealer on top of the finished surface in order to fortify it even more. This way, you will not have to keep finishing and refinishing the surface in order to ensure that it will uphold the value of your home. Below are some of the different benefits that you stand to enjoy by applying a layer of water based driveway sealer on your driveway. Read on and find out how you can further maintain your driveway using this kind of finishing.

It is true that people rarely spend so much time worrying about the state of their driveway, which is a shame for this part of your house is one of the first things people will notice when they visit your home. In order for you to be able to keep your driveway in pristine condition no matter how often you drive over it, you have to invest on good sealers that will help you fortify this area of your home. Driveway sealing is one of the best things that you may implement order to make the already durable materials used for your driveway stronger. All you have to do is to add a layer of sealer and you will be good to go.

Since your driveway is on the exterior of your home, it will come across different kind of forces that will cause a certain level of wear and tear. Applying a driveway sealer will help you see to it that the concrete will not bear signs of water, sunlight, or snow damage no matter what happens. Gone are the days when all you can do is to keep adding another layer of concrete in order to keep your driveway looking neat. With a sealer, you will be able to protect this area of your house even if you do not place much attention in maintaining this area of your home.

Applying layers of driveway sealer to your driveway will also make it so much easier for you to clean this part of your house. All you would have to do is to regularly sweep the area in order to keep it well maintained. This means that you will not have to worry yourself over taking extra care of the exteriors of your house, for all you have to do is to finish it using a water based driveway sealer.

The Importance of Small Business Networking Online | Social ...

Small Business Networking OnlineGetting involved in small business networking is not something most internet entrepreneurs typically consider! The reason being is many people feel that as an entrepreneur you must learn to 'go it alone' but this perception is flawed! The fact is that you can actually grow your business much faster and with less effort by sharing and combining your ideas and efforts!

If your intentions are to earn an income online there is no better way than by networking with like minded individuals!

Traffic

By involving yourself with other internet entrepreneurs you also open the door to joint ventures from which both you and others can benefit! Traffic sharing is a perfect example as to how businesses can come together and 'combine' their resources to accelerate their growth! This is especially valuable to most who work online since in the majority of cases people will be working alone therefore increasing work efficiency is important!

Exchange Ideas

Simply having others with whom you can share ideas and discuss common problems is a vitally important component when trying to build businesses! The fresh perspectives that others can present helps to open the doors to new possibilities while solving old problems! There is a saying 'two heads are better than one' and never is this more true then when trying to earn an income online! Internet entrepreneurs are constantly challenged by the ongoing changes this dynamic environment offers and networking tends to make these changes easier to manage!

Increase Exposure

Where having one business contact is good having many is even better and not only for support and ideas! The more you increase your exposure online the greater the consumer awareness becomes of the business your are building! Having this exposure helps you to grow your business that much faster since without traffic you have no customers. Most internet entrepreneurs can and do appreciate the effectiveness and ease this type of viral campaign can offer when trying to earn an income online!

Getting involved in small business networking is not something most internet entrepreneurs may recognize as important to their efforts! The mindset of the typical online entrepreneur is that they must 'go it alone' in order to earn an income but this is NOT true! The 3 reasons you'll want to consider networking with like-minded others are discussed above and are very compelling and hard to ignore! Always keep in mind as you grow your business online that even as an 'independent business person' a network can save you legwork, needless expense or even additional effort!

Hafla food idea ? enough with the hummus, try Karkaday! ? Jade ...

Instead of adding yet another serve of Hummus and flat bread to the 10 others on the table at your next Hafla, consider brewing up some Karkaday! Hibiscus tea is ubiquitous in Egypt and a refreshing drink often fondly remembered by returned travellers. Karkaday is reputed to have been a favoured drink of the Pharaohs and it is no wonder.

Karkaday from Egypt

Karkaday I bought in Egypt

An herbal tea drink consumed both hot and cold, it?s loaded with flavonoids which may:

  • Help support memory and concentration
  • Boost the effectiveness of vitamin C
  • Help promote a healthy heart and immune system
  • Support blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within the normal range
  • Help you manage weight challenges

Karkaday is Hibiscus tea, an infusion made from the calyces (sepals) of the Hibiscus sabdariffa flower. It is popular throughout the world but goes by a variety of names. In Italy, Egypt and the Sudan? it is referred to as Karkaday (spelling varies),? but elsewhere the names vary. It is referred to as roselle (another common name for the hibiscus flower), flor de Jamaica in Latin America, Chai Kujarat in Iraq, Chai Torsh in Iran, gumamela in the Philippines, bissap or wonjo in West Africa, sorrel in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, red sorrelin the wider Caribbean, and other names in other regions.

This is what the loose leaves look like.

You can buy hibiscus tea (or whatever it is called in your region) already made up as tea bags from a health food shop, herbalist or sometimes even from the supermarket. It can be served as a simple infusion (i.e. pour hot water on it) or work on an easy variation to impress your belly dance buddies. Hibiscus tea has a tantalisingly fresh, cranberry-like flavour and an attractive, deep red colour. Many drinkers like to add a sweetener like sugar to the beverage to reduce the tartness but that is a matter of taste.

Here is a suggested recipe that would give you approx. 14 cups full but you can make just one cup for yourself easily enough. Just put a small amount of hibiscus in an infuser (a use a tea bag), put it in your cup, pour on hot water from kettle and add sugar if its not sweet enough for you!

Karkaday Ingredients

  • 1 cup karkaday ?loose leaves (or hibiscus tea bags if not available)
  • 1 gallon (3.8 Litres) water.
  • ? cup Sugar (optional)
  • 1t orange flower water (optional)

Cooking Instructions

  • Boil water in a large saucepan.
  • Add karkaday.
  • Stir in sugar till it dissolves.
  • For a stronger, redder tea ? Leave for an hour.
  • Drain karkaday with a fine holed sieve to get rid of leaves.
  • Either cool in refrigerator or serve hot.

?

?I think I could do with a cuppa while I think out my next move?

You can find other hibiscus recipes here

?No need to wait for a Hafla though, next time you need a quick way to quench your thirst, why not try the tea used by the Pharaohs?

Have you tried karkaday? What?s your favourite recipe? Hot or cold? Comment below.

Uttoxeter Food & Drink Festival | This is Staffordshire

This weekend, Uttoxeter's iconic racecourse played host to a food & drink festival, featuring the very best in food & drink and local produce.

In addition, the event also had a number of appearences from several local heroes and culinary artisans. ??

  1. Uttoxeter Racecourse

  2. New Farm catering and cookery school

  3. DSCF2348

The weather was fairly blustery, but the sun made occasional appearences from behind the rainy clouds, illumiating the pristine surroundings in a vision of summer.

The festival took place in the race courses two main halls, as well as outside along the tracks, where a beer tent had been erected.?

From cheese to real ales, fudge to fresh fish, the festival was stock full of free tasters and discounted produce.?

Among the various stalls, was the New Farm Catering and Cookery School.

I was able to talk to founder Chris Scarratt and three of his proteges. "I was raised on a farm, rearing animals and livestock," says Chris.

"Later on, I moved to Switzerland, where I learned to be a patissier."

Since then, Chris set up New Farm, that not only teaches cooking?but also event management, giving students real life experience in event catering.?

To lend a hand at the event was apprentice Sophie Jackson, who said New Farm had provided her with the "indispensable skills and experience that university just couldn't provide".?

Patissier Ben Cann, on the other hand, just loves what he does.

The benefits of his apprenticeship at New Farm is learning new skills and different styles of cooking. "Chris speciailises in teaching method, not recipe," Ben says, "It allows you to grow creatively whilst still having the flexibility to perform advanced cookery skills."

"We have catered for a number of events", says Chris, "some of which have been big celebrities".

When asked on which celebrities, Chris was not at liberty to say, "but lets just say there may have been some royal guests in attendance".?

Meanwhile, in the real ale tent, a hog roast was taking place courtesy of Aston Marina.

Head Butcher, Nick Griffin was at hand, "nothing says party like a hog roast", he laughs.

The pig had started cooking as early as 2.15am and was ready to eat at about 9.30, just before guests started arriving at the racehorse.

"A pig this size, can provide 200 portions," says Nick, "and we serve big portions". ?

Titanic Brewery was also at hand, serving a range of its best ales, as well as Lymestone Brewery from Stone.?

Head brewer Ian Bradford was present, "we started 4 years ago, we use the finest ingredients and have years of brewing skill, and really take pride in our work."?

Lymestone were serving a number of ales throughout the day, from their lighter stonecutter to their slightly stronger stonefaced.?

The vistitors in attendance were in good spirits, June Whitfield from Uttoxeter said, "I've had enough free samples to keep me fed for a week!".?

Bernard Fulme from Leek couldn't get enough of the beer, "I should probably call it a day on the alcohol and try the cheeses," he laughed.?

Though there weren't as many people in attendance as there probably could have been in regards to all the fine produce on offer, the festibal had enough food and drink to impress any ****ossieur of cuisine. ?

Duct tape prom dress could win Kansas teen $5,000

(AP) ? A Kansas teen has earned a spot as a finalist in a national design competition with a prom dress made entirely from duct tape.

Brooke Wallace, 17, of Solomon, spent more than 200 hours fashioning a western-style prom dress for herself and a suit for her date from 42 rolls of duct tape. Wallace told The Salina Journal (http://bit.ly/MhlIuh) the effort wasn't just for kicks: She and her date, Mark Aylward, could each win $5,000 scholarships and their school could get $5,000 too.

The couple was recently named one of 10 finalists in a design contest sponsored by duct tape maker Duck Tape. The competition required couples to make and wear outfits made from duct tape to their spring proms and post pictures on a website. The winners will be chosen through online voting that runs through July 11.

Wallace said she went with a rodeo theme for their outfits because "we both live in the country, so it fit our style."

For her dress, made a slip out of light cotton material and then sewed sections of duct tape onto the fabric. The torso of Wallace's dress and Aylward's cowboy vest were made from 1,500 to 1,800 hand-folded triangles of tape, she said. Ruffles on her skirt and trim on his vest were crafted from turquoise and hot pink tape.

"I wanted colors that looked good together, along with an intricate design that would stand out," said Wallace, who will start her senior year at Solomon High School in the fall.

She also created accessories to go with the outfits, including a purse and earrings for herself and a bolo tie, lariat, gun and holster for Aylward, all from duct tape.

Wallace said there is one significant difference between her dress and her date's suit. While both were made with duct tape, her dress was sewn entirely from tape. It can be worn short or long because it has a detachable skirt.

To make Aylward's suit, she took ready-made pants, a vest, a coat, boots and a cowboy hat and covered them in duct tape. The only thing not taped was his shirt.

Aylward, 16, said the outfits attracted a lot of attention at the prom and people especially wanted to touch them.

"We stood and took pictures longer than anyone else," he said.

The duct tape dress wasn't Wallace's first foray into unusual design. She won a blue ribbon at the Tri-Rivers Fair last summer with a dress made from 60 Mountain Dew cans and nearly 600 pull tabs.

But for her senior prom next spring, she said, she'll probably do something "more normal."

Same-Sex Superhero Wedding Called 'Big Leap Forward' for Comic Books

The best-selling title in comics specialty shops across the nation this week depicted the first ?gay? wedding from industry leader Marvel Comics in which super-speedster Northstar married his long-time partner, a non-super black character named Kyle Jinadu.

Although the announcement regarding Astonishing X-Men #51 drew extensive press coverage back in May, the actual release received surprisingly little media attention, which came almost entirely from websites on homosexuality and comic book news, as well as a few cities where specialty stores hosted special events.

Many stores quickly sold out of the issue, which was hailed by the Advocate.com gay website as a ?big leap forward? for the medium since it featured the wedding of Northstar, a super-powered mutant named Jean-Paul Beaubier, to Jinadu, a sports company?s events manager

At Vanity Fair, writer Julie Miller called the increase of homosexual characters ?an attempt to promote equality and tolerance.?

The author also pointed to the recent announcement that Alan Scott, one of DC Comics' many Green Lanterns, has been rebooted as a gay man.

Miller said that Marvel, DC's main competitor, ?upped the open-mindedness ante by planning the medium?s first same-sex, interracial wedding in a major comic series.?

The story on the topic at sosogay.org was entitled: ?When You Wish Upon a Northstar, Dreams Come True.?

Along with selling copies of the new issue, a number of specialty stores marked the occasion by hosting same-sex wedding ceremonies in their shops.

The largest ceremony took place at Midtown Comics? in New York City where Scott Everhart, 39, and Jason Welker, 33, from Columbus, Ohio, were chosen from more than 50 applicants to take part in at its downtown location.

?It was a wedding for the books?comic books that is,? wrote Candace Wheeler of the Village Voice.

?One reason Welker and Everhart were chosen was that they live in Ohio, where same-sex is not legal,? Wheeler stated. ?They will have a private ceremony for friends and family when they return.?

?Midtown Comics co-owner Gerry Gladston said he was happy to help promote acceptance and tolerance,? she added.

Story Continues Below Ad ?

Also celebrating the occasion was MaximuM Comics in Las Vegas, Nevada, which held parties at its two locations on the day of the comic's release.

According to a report by KTNV-TV, store owner James Bosworth (who's gay) and his employees wore tuxedos during the celebration and stated that the parties were held to help customers ?celebrate the equality issue? regarding same-sex marriage.

?The Marvel Universe has always reflected the world outside your window, so we strive to make sure our characters, relationships and stories are grounded in that reality,? Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso told Jason M. Volack in one of the few articles on the event in the mainstream media.

?We?ve been working on this story for over a year to ensure Northstar and Kyle?s wedding reflects Marvel?s ?world outside your window? tradition,? Alonso added in the ABC News report.

?The story of Northstar and Kyle is universal, and at the core of everything I write: a powerful love between two people who have to fight for it against all odds,? writer Marjorie Liu said in the same article.

?This is the quintessential Marvel story, one that blends the modern world with the fantasy of super heroes in order to tell an exciting story that begins with a wedding?and continues in ways you can?t imagine,? she added.

As NewsBusters previously reported, liberals have taken the first step in the culture war on ?intolerance? by not allowing those on the other side of the issue to express their views.

One of the organizations protesting the inclusion of homosexual characters in comics is One Million Moms, which referred to the Marvel characters' marriage as ?shocking? and ?ridiculous.?

According to that group, homosexuals ?want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light.?

As a result, comic-book companies ?are heavily influencing our youth by using children's superheroes to desensitize and brainwash them into thinking that a gay lifestyle choice is normal and desirable.?
