World's Thinnest Transistor is Two-Thirds Complete

The high-tech devices of Silicon Valley depend on tiny, hard silicon chips. Yet in an imagined future in which walls, windows and clothes act as computing devices, the hardware components would have to be soft and flexible. One research group has taken a first step toward that flexible future, combining a conductor and an insulator in the thinnest sheet possible ? just one atom thick.

"This work shows that it is possible to bring together these two materials. What we believe that opens the doors to is the ability to create these atomically thin electronics, or more-complicated stacked electronics," said Mark Levendorf, a graduate student who worked on the new material. Levendorf studies nanotech chemistry at Cornell University.?

"It's in the early phases," he added. "It's a step in the right direction toward miniaturizing things."?

Transistors ? the building blocks of all modern digital computers ? require a conductor, an insulator and a semiconductor. Getting two of the three into the universe's thinnest sheet is a significant feat, said Chagaan Baatar, manager of the nanoscale electronics program at the Office of Naval Research, in Arlington, Va. [Ten Computers That Changed the World]

"This is the first time researchers have succeeded in patching together two different materials with vastly different electronic properties in the same two-dimensional (2D) sheet," he said in an email to InnovationNewsDaily.?

For its conductor, the new material uses graphene, a?one-atom-thick sheet of carbon?that carries electrons faster than any other chemical at room temperature. Because graphene is flexible and works much faster than silicon, many researchers think it will be a?key supplement to silicon?in the future. Because it's transparent, it also may go into touch screens. Labs around the world are studying how to put graphene into electronic devices.?

Levendorf and his colleagues developed a technique to control exactly where they lay down the graphene and their insulator, boron nitride. With their specially patterned graphene and boron nitride, they created 1-centimeter- to 1-inch-long pieces of material through which they were able to run currents. Their tight control of where they arranged the graphene and the boron nitride meant they could direct currents in any way they wanted, which is important for building circuits, Levendorf said.

They built up their sheet through a technique that's used in industry now, so it should be easy to create larger pieces of the graphene-boron nitride material, Levendorf said.

"That's another thing we're pretty excited about," he told InnovationNewsDaily. The Cornell lab was limited to 1-inch pieces because of its equipment, but other labs have the equipment to make larger pieces, he said.?

Nevertheless, it may be a decade or longer before graphene transistors show up in people's laptops, Baatar said. The major hurdle to creating graphene-based computers is that it's impossible to stop the flow of current through graphene. That means researchers can't create transistors that turn on and off, which would be necessary to set up the logic questions that silicon digital devices use to operate. ?

"The challenge is formidable," Baatar said. But not impossible: "Unless you are violating some fundamental laws of nature, I would say nothing is impossible in science," he said, "particularly when it comes to a material as unique as graphene."

Adding a semiconductor to graphene would help. Levendorf and his colleagues are working on adding molybdenum disulfide to their material.?

They published their work on their graphene-boron nitride sheet today (Aug. 29) in the journal Nature.?

Red Bulls salvage tie with United

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:01 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilman Conde scored in the 88th minute to lift the New York Red Bulls to a 2-2 draw against D.C. United on Wednesday night.

Joel Lindpere also scored for New York (13-7-7) on a night that, until very late, looked to be remembered for Dwayne De Rosario's 100th career MLS goal.

De Rosario scored in the 68th minute to pass the milestone and put United ahead 2-1. Nick DeLeon also scored for D.C. (12-9-5), which tied a club record set in 2007 by extending its home unbeaten streak to 13.

New York stretched its unbeaten streak to four matches as it closed to within a point of first-place Sporting Kansas City. The Red Bulls drew 1-1 at Sporting on Sunday.

With time running out and New York pressing for the tying score, a half-clearance trickled outside the 18-yard-box and into the Conde's path. The defender struck a knuckling blast with his first touch into the top right corner and beyond Bill Hamid's dive for his first goal of the season.

De Rosario had put D.C. ahead 20 mijnutes earlier on a header of DeLeon's cross from the right made easier by a poorly timed run by goalkeeper Bill Gaudette. Instead of remaining in his goal, Gaudette came to try and punch away the cross, but was beaten by De Rosario, who had an empty net to aim at.

With the goal, De Rosario became the seventh player, and second active one, to pass the 100-goal plateau in the league's 17-year history.

Lindpere scored in the 19th minute on a drive from the left side that appeared to deflect off Bill Hamid's side and into the right post.

Two minutes later, DeLeon struck back on a somewhat softly struck side-footed volley of De Rosario's cross that somehow squeezed beneath Gaudettes dive to the left.

Malaria: Protein impedes microcirculation of malaria-infected red blood cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? When the parasite responsible for malaria infects human red blood cells, it launches a 48-hour remodeling of the host cells. During the first 24 hours of this cycle, a protein called RESA undertakes the first step of renovation: enhancing the stiffness of the cell membranes.

That increased rigidity impairs red blood cells' ability to travel through the blood vessels, especially at fever temperatures, according to a new study from researchers at MIT, the Institut Pasteur and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

This marks the first time that scientists have identified the specific role of the RESA protein in modulating blood circulation in an environment that mimics physiological conditions, and could help researchers determine new strategies to combat malaria, which infects an estimated 300 to 500 million people worldwide each year.

The study -- coordinated by MIT's Ming Dao, a principal research scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE); Monica Diez Silva, a research scientist in DMSE; and YongKeun Park, an assistant professor of physics at KAIST -- appears Aug. 30 in Scientific Reports, an online journal of Nature.

Other MIT authors are Subra Suresh, former dean of the MIT School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering who is currently on leave from MIT serving as the director of the National Science Foundation; Jongyoon Han, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS); Sha Huang, an EECS graduate student; recent PhD recipient Hansen Bow; and the late Michael Feld, professor of physics.

This paper is the culmination of a collaboration between MIT and Institut Pasteur begun in 2004 when Suresh spent a sabbatical in Paris. The new results on dynamic microcirculation significantly extend earlier static experiments by the Suresh lab and the Pasteur team published in 2007, in which they found that RESA makes the red blood cell membrane stiffer than that of a healthy red blood cell by binding to the cell's internal scaffolding, called the cytoskeleton.

"The new work combines the latest advances in genetics, microfabrication, nanomechanics and computational modeling by bringing together interdisciplinary and international teams," says Suresh, the senior author of the paper.

Parasite invasion

When a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, bites a human, the parasite invades the liver, where it divides to produce tens of thousands of merozoites -- the form that can infect red blood cells. After several days or weeks, these merozoites are released into the bloodstream.

In the next stage of infection, the merozoites take up residence inside the red blood cells for about 48 hours, producing more copies of themselves. The RESA protein is expressed only during the first 24 hours, which is known as the "ring stage" due to the circular shape of the merozoites. During this stage, RESA "almost singlehandedly" alters the mechanical properties of red blood cell membranes, Dao says.

For the new study, the researchers created a microfluidic system at MIT that allowed them to study how RESA influences malaria-infected cells as they circulate. As cells flow through the microfluidic channels, they encounter narrow openings that are about the same width as the smallest capillaries (about three micrometers, or about 4 percent of the thickness of the human hair). The team found that malaria-infected cells passed through these channels much more slowly than healthy cells, due to the increased rigidity of the cells caused by the RESA protein.

The researchers also studied infected blood cells as they flowed through a microbead filtration system created at the Institut Pasteur. This system, which consists of densely packed tiny spheres, mimics the structure of the human spleen, which filters blood and removes old blood cells.

While RESA made the infected cells more rigid, they were still able to make it through the microbead system, suggesting that they would also slip through the spleen undetected. "In the ring stage the majority of the infected cells still go past, producing new parasites," Diez Silva says.

The researchers also found that RESA's effects on membrane stiffness and deformability are enhanced at fever temperatures: At these higher temperatures, RESA stabilizes the cell membrane so that it won't disintegrate. This is advantageous to the parasite because it helps the cell remain intact until the end of the 48-hour cycle, allowing it to produce many more copies of itself.

Mohandas Narla, vice president for research at the New York Blood Center, says the study is impressive and one of very few to look at the effects of temperature on malaria infection.

"Malaria is a very widespread global disease, so there is a lot of research being done on it, but most of the people who study it focus on biophysical measurements without paying attention to the fever part of the story," says Narla, who was not part of the research team.

Stopping the cycle

During the second 24 hours of the red blood cell infection, when RESA is no longer expressed, the parasite starts producing other proteins that make the cells even more rigid. They also churn out proteins that cause the cells to clump together and stick to the walls of blood vessels. At the end of the 48-hour cycle, the infected red blood cells burst and release new copies of the parasite, which target new cells and start the cycle over again.

Because they are so sticky, infected blood cells can't reach the spleen during this stage, so there is no chance for them to be filtered out. The new findings suggest that it might be beneficial to seek drugs that boost RESA expression during the first half of the cycle, when cells are still able to get into the spleen, the researchers say. Then, because the cells would be more rigid than typical infected blood cells, the spleen might be able to capture more of them.

The researchers are now further exploring how the spleen interacts with malaria-infected cells. The new microfluidic system used to mimic microcirculation in the small blood vessels is also being further studied as a novel diagnostic tool for detecting malaria and other diseases.

The research was funded by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Center, the National Institutes of Health, the KAIST Institute for Optical Science and Technology, and the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche.

Computer Network, Systems, and Database Administrators Are in ...

If you?re looking for a fast-paced career that combines technology with creativity, check out the field of computer network, systems, and database administration. This dynamic career path reflects the increasing number of computer networks in business today.

In the workplace, computers and computer networks have become an integral part of everyday life. Nearly everyone who works in an office has a computer, and big companies may have thousands of workstations, each with a computer terminal. These computers don?t just sit on desks like little islands; they need to be linked together into one seamless operating system. The ways that computers are linked together include local-area networks (LAN), wide-area networks (WAN), network segments, and Internet and intranet systems. Networks can be very complex, and creating a network of computers is a task that must be performed by highly qualified personnel.

Network and computer systems administrators design, install, and support an organization?s computer network systems. Network and computer systems administrators work in a wide variety of organizations including professional offices, government organizations, small businesses, and large corporations. They analyze problems, maintain a company?s network hardware and software, and monitor networks to ensure their functionality. Administrators may plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures, and they may gather data to identify customer needs and then use the information to identify, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements.

Systems administrators ensure that the design of an organization?s computer system allows all of the components, including the network, the computers, and software, to work properly together. They are often responsible for maintaining the network?s efficiency, and they monitor and adjust the network?s performance. They continually survey the current computer system to determine future network needs, troubleshoot problems reported by users and by automated network monitoring systems, and make recommendations for future system upgrades.

When the computers in the sales office crash, or when the finance people can?t access their networked spreadsheets, or when the warehouse cannot access the intranet to track a shipment, the company can become paralyzed. A network systems administrator is the person who can, and must, resolve these network issues. It?s an important position.

Education and training are key. A bachelor?s degree is required for many network and computer systems administrator positions. In addition, many employers will demand that applicants have specialized computer network training of the type that may be offered by a career college. The best way to explore your career training opportunities is to log onto a reputable online college directory and compare computer training programs. Choose the ones that are right for you and request free information from the schools. This will allow you to make the best choice for your career education.

Here are some of the program areas that are key to this career field:

? Computers and electronics ? Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

? English language ? Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

? Mathematics ? Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.

? Administration and management ? Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

The career outlook is excellent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in the current decade from 2008 to 2018 employment of computer network, systems, and database administrators is expected to increase by 30 percent, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for computer network administrators is expected to increase as companies continue to invest in new technologies.

Compensation can be generous. According to the BLS, as of May of 2006, the median annual earnings of wage-and-salary network and computer systems administrators was $62,130. Not bad!

If you?re looking for a challenging and rewarding career, check out computer network systems career training. It may open a new door to a bright future.

Arizona Republicans go to polls in primary

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Republicans in Arizona voted on Tuesday for their candidate in the race to replace Senator Jon Kyl, who is stepping down at the end of the year, with conservative U.S. Representative Jeff Flake favored to win.

Flake was leading by a huge margin in opinion polls over Wil Cardon, a feisty political newcomer with deep pockets, in a primary election for a seat that Republicans need if they are to have a chance to take control of the Senate in the November election.

The U.S. Senate contest in Arizona is the highest-profile race among state primaries on Tuesday that include votes in Vermont and Alaska, as well as a runoff election in Oklahoma.

Flake is a six-term member of the House of Representatives, while businessman Cardon oversees his family's portfolio of real estate investments.

The winner will be the Republican nominee in the race to replace Kyl, a party leader who announced in February he would not seek a fourth six-year term in office.

The Democratic nominee in the November 6 general election is Richard Carmona, a former U.S. Surgeon General and a decorated Vietnam War veteran originally from New York.

Asked after he cast his vote early on Tuesday if he felt confident, Arizona native Flake said "yes," adding that he was already looking ahead to facing Carmona in November.

"It's going to be a great general election. I think the choice is clear between somebody who understands the Arizona issues, who has been there ... against somebody who is handpicked by President Obama to run here in Arizona," he said.

Both Kyl and Arizona's other U.S. senator, John McCain, have endorsed Flake in a race that started out fiery but has cooled lately.

Cardon came out swinging early with a costly advertising blitz casting Flake as a Washington insider who favored tax increases and was soft on illegal immigration, although the challenger has reduced his spending in recent weeks.

Flake, 49, has offered what he said is a "proven track record" of voting to reduce the size of government and cutting taxes and spending.

Cardon, 41, has contributed nearly $8.8 million of his own money through the August 8 candidate-filing period in a bid to establish himself as an outsider and businessman with experience.

A poll by the Western Representation political action committee released Friday had Flake leading Cardon by 64 to 16 percent. The survey of 400 Republican voters had a margin of error of 4.9 points.

Republicans already have a majority in the U.S. House and must hold onto open seats such as Arizona's and gain four in other states to take control of the Senate.

In another hotly contested Arizona primary, two Republican incumbents will battle for the chance to be on the November ballot for a U.S. House seat.

Ben Quayle, son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, takes on David Schweikert, in an expected tight contest brought about by the once-a-decade redistricting. It is one of 11 such House contests between incumbents nationwide this year.

Comment: Finding the right technology to suit you - Retail Gazette

Comment: Finding the right technology to suit you

Mark O'Hanlon, Manager at Kurt Salmon

Mark O'Hanlon 10:07AM - Tue 28th August 2012

The operating models for grocery and fashion retailers may be quite different but there is considerable overlap when it comes to adopting new technology to improve the customer experience in the omni-channel world.

While leading edge technology, such as virtual shopping walls and augmented reality, for instance, are being trialled by a handful of retailers worldwide there is no doubt that the organisations that are innovative in the use of technology will gain considerable competitive advantage. Today?s customers increasingly expect innovations and, relatively quickly, these become a hygiene factor. There is a considerable risk to those retailers who have inflexible operating models and are unable to capitalise on the opportunities that new technology will provide.

So while much of this new technology is having a customer-facing impact, it will inevitably have a bearing on how retailers go to market and impact on their overall business strategy. An added advantage for early adopters, even for trials, is both valuable brand awareness that lives longer than the trial itself and the opportunity to collect more data about customers and products. Furthermore, technology offers all retailers the opportunity to lower their ?per customer cost?, meaning improvements in Return on Capital Employed and other key metrics.

Adidas was the first company in the world to launch a virtual shopping wall and since then the next most high profile adopter has been Tesco, first with the walls in railway and bus stations in Korea designed to assisted time-pressed commuters and, more recently, its trial at Gatwick Airport.

Virtual walls represents a relatively low investment (compared with establishing a bricks and mortar store) to gain a presence in high footfall locations. Tesco has relentlessly pursued a decade-long strategy to give everyone in the country access to its brand more often than its competitors and with the wall has identified another opportunity to sign up customers to its online network, this time while they have time on their hands. Naturally, Tesco will crawl all over the data that it gleans on the back of this trial and be in a really good position to decide whether this scheme represents another great way to expand its UK footprint.

The Tesco trial is timely as all grocers are taking a closer look at their property portfolios and virtual walls could become another ?format? to reach new (or existing) customers .

Ocado has already conducted two similar trials: last year at One New Change in London and then in July in Birmingham?s Bullring shopping centre. How long will it be before Amazon follows suit? And on the fashion side, will we see Net-a-Porter, ASOS or even Missguided developing versions to give them a presence ?on the street??

Where fashion retailers are further ahead is in the use of augmented reality. While this is still emerging technology, both in terms of its sophistication and relative cost , it is beginning to be used more widely by retailers to improve the customer experience. Principally, it is allowing shoppers to understand products better and to make comparisons easily, as well as, creating a point of differentiation.

One of the better examples of this is Goertz, which has set up virtual fitting rooms in busy shopping centres and train stations in Germany that allow shoppers to try on multiple types of shoes and even send pictures of them to their friends and request feedback.

Among UK early adopters are Net-a-Porter, ASOS and New Look who are using it within advertisements, directing viewers to richer product information with the opportunity to go directly to buy the product.

The grocery ?version? has just come to life with another Tesco first ? this time with its cover-to-cover augmented reality food magazine Real Food. Recipes are brought to life and readers can scan them and go straight to the Tesco online store to buy the ingredients.

For grocers the investment in new technology is always going to around the convenience factor, whereas with fashion retailers it is much more about enabling consumers to further explore the company?s offer and be ?inspirational? ? that it also addresses the convenience factor is a bonus.

What is certain is that technology is advancing quicker than retailers can update their operating models to capitalise on each new opportunity. However, what they need to make certain is that the technology is not just about adding a new ?gimmick? but something that will help customers get what they want.

How to get started with Microsoft SkyDrive | Business Productivity

In last week?s blog article I wrote about the changes Microsoft has made to its online storage offering SkyDrive. I know that many of you haven?t used SkyDrive before, so this week I thought I would help those of you who want to get started. Again, SkyDrive is a free service provided by Microsoft so the only thing you need to invest to get started is a little bit of your time.

How to sign up for SkyDrive

To get started with Microsoft SkyDrive go to http://www.skydrive.com. If you already have a Microsoft account (if you have a Hotmail, Live or MSN email account for instance) you can use the same username and password to log in to SkyDrive. If you haven?t used any of Microsoft?s services before you can sign up for a new account.

How to navigate and structure your SkyDrive account

The first time you log in to your SkyDrive account you will see a document folder that looks like a tile (square) with zero documents. If you hover over the tile you will see a little square in the top right corner that you can click to mark the folder. When you have the folder marked, a menu will appear where you can choose to perform various actions with the folder ? Rename, Delete or Move your folder.

I recommend that you think through the folder structure of your SkyDrive and give your folders appropriate names in order to facilitate saving and sharing. Perhaps you have documents you want to share with your family, friends, business partners or relatives. If so, it?s much easier if you organize your folders and files into a proper structure. The below table provides an example of various folders, their contents and whom they are shared with.

How to upload and create documents to SkyDrive

You can upload any type of file to your document folder on SkyDrive. Just make sure to abide by Microsoft?s code of conduct. To upload a document, just mark the folder and click on ?Upload? on the folder menu.

Now you can select one or more documents from your computer that you want to upload to SkyDrive. You can easily rearrange the files in your folders by just dragging and dropping them to the desired location.

You should be aware that in order to speed up the upload and to reduce the size of the files, SkyDrive will compress pictures that you upload. If you don?t want to lose any picture quality just clear the check box that says ?Resize photos to 2048 px.?

You can also create documents from scratch directly from your browser using the Microsoft Office Web Apps. Mark a folder where you want the document to be located, click ?Create?, and select which type of document you want to create (text document, spreadsheet, presentation or notebook). The appropriate Microsoft Office application will open up in your browser so that you can create your document. Note that you don?t have to have Microsoft Office installed on your computer to create these documents.

How to set up synchronization of files to your PC

In addition to uploading documents to your SkyDrive folders you can keep a local copy of the folders and files on your computer and have them synchronized automatically. This is a great way to keep your files backed up without having to upload them yourself. In order to enable this you need to have ?SkyDrive for Windows? installed on your PC (there is a version for Macintosh as well). To install the application just click ?PCs? in the left navigation pane and then ?Download SkyDrive for Windows? and follow the step by step guide.

Now you will have a folder on your PC that is connected to your SkyDrive account. Any changes you make to the folders and files here will be synchronized (assuming you have an Internet connection).

How to share folders and files

You can share individual files or entire folders with other people. Mark the folder or file you want to share by hovering over and marking the check box and then click ?Share? in the top menu. You can select to share in a number of different ways, by letting SkyDrive automatically send an email with a link, by letting SkyDrive post the link to a social network like Twitter, LinkedIn or FaceBook, or by letting SkyDrive generate a link for you that you can share with whomever you want using any kind of method (by pasting it into an email, an instant message, etc.)

You can always see with whom you have shared a file or a folder by clicking the properties pane. Here you can easily remove someone?s rights to access a folder or a file if you no longer want them to have access to it.

More than just free storage

With the SkyDrive offering you get a lot more than just free online storage. Included with the SkyDrive offering you get web versions of Microsoft Office at no cost! This is a huge benefit for millions of people around the world who want to create and share Microsoft Office documents, but they might not be able to afford the full Microsoft Office application suite. Whether you can afford the suite or not, having a free web version of the Office applications accessible from any computer with an Internet connection and a browser is a great productivity booster that I urge you to take advantage of!

BiancaNogrady.com: Asbestos may raise risk of non-lung cancers

From ABC Science Online, News in Science, 27 August 2012:

Children exposed to blue asbestos may face more wide-ranging health problems in adulthood than mesothelioma and lung cancer, according to an Australian study.

Researchers from Western Australia analysed health data from children who lived at Wittenoom, a now-abandoned WA town where blue asbestos was mined for nearly 20 years.

The results, reported in the journal American Journal of Industrial Medicine , indicate exposure to blue asbestos in early childhood elevated the risk of a range of cancers and even heart disease in adulthood.

Among women who spent a childhood at Wittenoom, the risk of mesothelioma (asbestos-related lung disease) was 70 to 113 times greater than among the general population.

They also had a roughly four-fold increase in risk of brain cancer and three-fold increase in the risk of ovarian cancer.

The increase in risk of mesothelioma was slightly lower in men than in women, but men also showed an increased risk of brain, colorectal and prostate cancer, and leukaemia.

While the total numbers of cancers were still small, researchers say this was the first study to report on cancer incidence and mortality in adults exposed to blue asbestos as children.

"This is a unique cohort of nearly 2,500 children with quantitative measures of asbestos exposure, exposure to a known asbestos type (crocidolite) and good followup," the researchers write.

"Most of this cohort has now reached an age when chronic adult diseases are becoming more prevalent and potential associations between adult disease and childhood exposures can be explored."Read more here.

Tea can suit cocktails to a T - Bites

Linnea Covington

More bartenders are experimenting with tea in their cocktails. The Savannah cocktail at Maison Premiere infuses Pernod with Darjeeling tea.

By Linnea Covington

Since opening last November of last year, DavidsTea has been pushing the idea of innovative, creative teas to the masses. The Canadian company has already added chocolate, coffee, nuts and candy to some of their blends. Now, they are launching a cocktail collection of tea to debut Sept. 12.

?We found many DavidsTea drinkers were coming up with these great cocktails using our loose leaf teas, and we thought we would make it easy for them and put our favorites in one box, complete with recipes,? said company co-founder David Segal.

So, now you can make an Exotica Thai Martini with their tropical Exotica blend, the Goji Pop Fizz (recipe below), with their light and fruity Goji Pop tea, and three other tantalizing adult beverages.

But the tea cocktails trend doesn?t stop there. While DavidsTea helps you make your own, you can also sip on professional versions all over New York City. At Red Rooster in Harlem, for example, celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson just launched a new line of four teas called Ambessa (which means "lion" in the Amharic language) and offers a drink made with his Earl of Harlem (recipe below) mixture. In this beverage, the smoky flavors of the tea complement the sweetness of vodka and lemon.

At Maison Premiere in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, bartenders infuse Pernod with Darjeeling in their Savannah drink. They know they?re not the first ones to do so; in fact, the restaurant?s beverage director and head bartender, Maxwell Britten, said putting tea in drinks isn?t that unusual.?

?Tea in cocktails has been a method used for longer than cocktails have been around,? Britten told TODAY.com. ?During the British Empire era and the spice trading boom, people applied tea to a beverage favorite known as punch. They found it added depth to the concoction by giving it an herbaceous or sweet quality, which can often bring out definition of the drink or flavors that are already there.?

Cocktail maven Audrey Saunders of Pegu Club has known for years that tea can add depth to drinks, and she experiments with the combination in her Earl Grey MarTEAni. You can also find tasty tea-infused drinks at Jbird Cocktails in the Upper East Side, where they make their Imperial March with Chinese black tea infused with Cognac. The restaurant also adds chamomile grappa to their light and floral Camomila Cocktail.

Parm serves a Chinatown Sling made with tea-infused gin, and at the French-Japanese fusion restaurant Mihoko?s 21 Grams, bar manager Raphael Reyes puts jasmine tea in their Coquette cocktails and hibiscus tea in the Belle ?poque. Finally, at Bistro The Tea Set, owner Jacques Doassan spikes his champagne with tea-steeped simple syrup in flavors like green apple mate and red peach vanilla.

?When it comes to infusing tea into a cocktail, there are actually myriad ways to accomplish this,? suggested tea sommelier Chris Cason, co-founder of Tavalon Tea. ?But also, it is important to remember that any good cocktail is about balance, and you don?t want to pair a light tea with a strong spirit or it will overpower it and vice versa.?

To make your own tea-infused adult beverage, Cason has a couple of suggestions. One, he said, is to make tea as you normally would and use that?as a mixer; warm is great for a hot toddy, cold for a cool drink, or you can freeze brewed tea into ice cubes. Another method is seeping the tea leaves in the spirit, although Carson warns you shouldn't leave the tea in for more than 45 minutes, lest the tea?s tannins make the liquor bitter.

Finally, you can make tea-infused simple syrup by brewing the tea, then adding equal parts sugar and melting it all together. Voila! The new face of tea just got a lot more fun.

Little evidence supports autism treatment options in adolescents

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Vanderbilt University researchers studying interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism are reporting that there is insufficient evidence to support findings, good or bad, for the therapies currently used.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

"Overall, there is very little evidence in all areas of care for adolescents and young adults with autism, and it is urgent that more rigorous studies be developed and conducted," said Melissa McPheeters, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center and senior author of the report, a systematic review of therapies published by the Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, said, "There are growing numbers of adolescents and adults with autism in need of substantial support. Without a stronger evidence base, it is very hard to know which interventions will yield the most meaningful outcomes for individuals with autism and their families."

Key findings:

The researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders. They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

? Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.

? Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain.

? Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers' confidence in their conclusions. The researchers' findings on vocational interventions will be featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children, but newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which estimates that one in 54 boys in the United States have autism.

"With more and more youth with autism leaving high school and entering the adult world, there is urgent need for evidence-based interventions that can improve their quality of life and functioning," said Julie Lounds Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of Pediatrics and Special Education and lead author of the report.

Additional investigators on this report include Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, M.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Pharmacology and Kennedy Center investigator; Dwayne Dove, M.D., Ph.D., fellow in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics; Nila Sathe, M.S., M.L.I.S., program manager, Institute for Medicine and Public Health; and Rebecca Jerome, M.L.I.S., M.P.H., assistant director, Eskind Biomedical Library.

Their research, published in the report, Interventions for Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Effective Health Care Program and conducted through Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center.

PFT: Ravens rookie fined $15,760 for hit on Hill

doty-nfl

After a bailiff cries ?all rise? and Judge David S. Doty strolls, marches, and/or glides into his Minneapolis courtroom the morning after the Giants host the Cowboys in the first game of the regular season, the NFL and NFLPA will get their first glimpse into the predispositions of the jurist who?ll decide whether or not the union?s surprising claim of a ?secret salary cap? in 2010 may proceed.

It was a surprise because the claim came well after 2010 ended, and after the new CBA presumably wiped the slate clean between the league and the players, erasing all pending legal issues including any collusion claims that could have been made based on actual or perceived restraints on spending in a year that was supposed to have none.? (Technically, the labor deal imposed a handful of limits in 2010, such as restrictions on the free-agent signings by the teams finishing in the final eight from 2009.)

It was a surprise also because the NFLPA had signed off on cap penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, penalties which revealed that the two teams were being punished because they didn?t comply with the ?spirit? of a salary cap that didn?t exist.? The union agreed with the penalties because the union desperately needed the NFL likewise to agree to a number-fudging that would allow the NFLPA to avoid the kind of reduction in the salary cap from 2011 to 2012 that would have been awkward, to say the least, as executive director DeMaurice Smith?s re-election approached.

Now that the billable hours have hit the fan, Judge Doty will have to decide whether he?s more persuaded by technicality, or by equity.

As framed by the NFLPA in its final written submission, a copy of which PFT has obtained, the players claim that the NFL didn?t do enough to engineer a release and waiver of claims for past collusion when the new CBA was finalized and all pending litigation was concluded in 2011.? Apart from whether the documents drafted by the parties contained the right magic words to make the claims for collusion in 2010 disappear, the NFLPA has advanced an intriguing argument based on the nature of class actions.? (Try to stay awake on this, please.? If it helps, the link on ?magic words? goes to a Bugs Bunny cartoon.)

The union smartly argues that claims made on behalf of a class of litigants can be extinguished by court order only.? And so the union claims that, by not ensuring that Judge Doty would officially wipe out the collusion claims, the collusion claims weren?t wiped out.

If Judge Doty agrees, it will mean that the league?s lawyers screwed up.

Balanced against that technical application of the rules is fairness and common sense.? Regardless of the specific words or procedures used by the parties, the idea was to hit the reset button on all legal issues between the parties.? The league made concessions and the players made concessions and now the players are trying to avoid one of the concessions they made.? Some judges would decide, quickly, that such an outcome simply isn?t fair.

Compounding the potential for a finding that the NFLPA is pushing for a fundamentally unfair outcome is the fact that the players gladly signed off on cap penalties that necessarily exposed the existence of collusion in 2010 in order to get something the NFLPA needed ? a higher salary cap in 2012.? It?s unseemly, to say the least, for the NFLPA to now try to use that which it gave up to get a high cap number as the basis for seeking billions in collusion damages for allegedly depressed spending in 2010, especially since it should have been obvious to anyone paying attention that something fishy was going on.

Did the NFL engage in collusion in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Should the NFLPA has done something about it in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Is there something that doesn?t feel right about the NFLPA agreeing to the cap penalties that made the collusion crystal clear and then suing for collusion?? Absolutely.

But what we/I/anyone else thinks doesn?t matter.? Judge Doty will provide the first official word on the issue.? And if Doty agrees that the collusion case may proceed, look for the NFL try to appeal that decision immdiately, arguing that if the next level in the federal court system sees it the NFL?s way, there?s no reason to spend the time and money associated with developing the evidence that would prove collusion.

Even though that evidence should be fairly easy to find.

How to read GPS data (RS232) by BeagleBone (3.3V TTL) - All ...

Hello,
I am trying to read GPS data via BeagleBone. GPS is giving me RS232 ( +/- 12V), I can read this with no problem with serial port on PC. I understand that BeagleBOne accept only 3,3V, so I used MAX232EIN to lower RS232 to TTL level. After that I can not read output using my serial port on PC. I get some gibberish. Looking at the oscilloscope I see output after MAX232 of 0-5V, inverted as compare to original signal and good quality. What is missing??
Can serial port read TTL signal?
My plans is also to use Logic Level Converter BOB-08745 by Sparkfun to get to 3.3 V level as needed by BeagleBOne.

Is my thinking correct, and why I can not read serial data after using MAX232 and converting RS232 to TTL?

I also did experiment by converting TTL signal back to RS232 using another channel of MAX232 and again signal became readable.

Thanks in advance
Robert

Pigs Invade Mars in 'Angry Birds Space: Red Planet'

It's official ? space pigs have taken over Mars.

In a humorous but beneficial partnership to both parties, Rovio, the creator of the "Angry Birds" series, has teamed up with NASA to provide something both fun and educational to players of all ages. "Angry Birds Space: Red Planet" is now available for download on both iOS and Android devices, as an update to the currently released game.

With "Red Planet," NASA was able to introduce a familiar vehicle into "Angry Birds Space" ? the?Mars Rover Curiosity, which recently made the trek to Mars, ?much to the delight of millions. Rovio has even found a way to include Curiosity in the game, as players have to track down three hidden Rovers throughout each level.

Long-time "Angry Birds" fans will be pleased to know that the gameplay is still quite addictive, and along with the cool gravity-based elements from the original "Space" game, you have a couple of new items to help you out.

Volcanoes scattered throughout each stage give off huge air gusts that shoot your birds in different directions, keeping them in play. You can also hit asteroids that explode on impact, meaning big trouble for breakable objects ? and the pigs ? alike. [Angry Birds in Space (Gallery)]

In addition to providing arcade-style fun, however, "Angry Birds Space: Red Planet" also educates, as it features links to NASA web pages that discuss Mars in more detail, whether it's the recent Curiosity landing or prior visits to the Red Planet.

"Rovio is teaching huge new audiences about NASA's missions to Mars thanks to this collaboration," said David Weaver, associate administrator for communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in a statement. "It's a great way to introduce both kids and adults to the wonders of the planet in a fun and entertaining way."

"Angry Birds Space" has even launched into actual space in the form of a plush toy bird that flew to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Once there, NASA astronaut Don Pettit used the toy and green balloons decorated as pigs to give a real-life demonstration of Angry Birds in space.

If you already own the game, the "Red Planet" update is free of charge and available for download now. (If not, the game itself is on sale for $1.) Rovio has said that it will be coming to other platforms in the weeks ahead, though a timetable has not been set. Check out the YouTube trailers below for a funny little introduction to the pack, as well as the gameplay.

Islam Afifi, the chief editor of el-Dustour newspaper, center, attends a court hearing in Cairo, Egypt, Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012. A Cairo court on Thursday ordered the chief editor of an Egyptian newspaper detained pending trial on charges of insulting the country?s president and ?spreading lies.? The case against Afifi of the privately-owned el-Dustour daily is one of several lawsuits brought mainly by Egypt?s Islamists against journalists, accusing them of inflammatory coverage and inciting the public against the Muslim Brotherhood, the country?s largest political group. (AP Photo/Mohammed Asad)

(AP) ? The editor of an independent Egyptian daily has been released from jail just hours after the country's Islamist president issued a new law that bans imprisoning journalists on charges related to their articles.

It was the first time President Mohammed Morsi had issued a law since he assumed legislative powers earlier this month.

Islam Afifi was photographed smiling and being greeted by staff from the privately-owned el-Dustour newspaper after his release late on Thursday. He was detained just hours earlier following a court decision that he be held in custody pending his trial in September.

Afifi has been charged with slandering the president and harming public interest with inflammatory articles published in his newspaper. The articles criticized Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest political group group.

Asian markets fall on signs of fading growth

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian markets fell Friday as disappointment over weak economic indicators from the United States, China and Europe offset hopes for more stimulus from central banks.

Oil fell below $96 a barrel after a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policymaking board dampened hopes for additional stimulus.

Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1.2 percent to 9,070.76 and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1 percent to 2,090.81. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.2 percent to 19,898.43.

Traders were dismayed by U.S. data showing the number of people seeking unemployment assistance rose for a second straight week.

Markets rose Wednesday after minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting showed bankers favored more stimulus. But they fell Thursday after the president of the St. Louis Fed said officials were considering new data that might make further action unnecessary.

"There now once again appears to be a state of confusion as to what the market can expect from the Fed at its next meeting in mid-September," analyst Cameron Peacock of Australia's IG Markets said in a report.

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi declined 1.2 percent to 1,919.81, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 was off 0.8 percent at 4,349.

In China, a survey found manufacturing activity weakened in August despite repeated government stimulus efforts. HSBC Corp. said Thursday the preliminary version of its purchasing managers' index fell to a nine-month low of 47.8 on a scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction. New export orders fell at their fastest rate in three years.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is pumping money into the economy through high spending on public works. Several major cities have announced multibillion-dollar spending plans but analysts expect major initiatives to be put off until after a new Communist Party leadership is installed this fall.

U.S. new home sales rose 3.6 percent in July, but DBS Group said that only offset a drop of identical size the previous month.

Aside from improved employment and retail sales in July, "the data has been unchanged or slightly worse," DBS Group economists said in a report.

In Europe, the PMI of overall economic activity in the 17-country eurozone was at 46.6 points in August, up only slightly from July's 46.5.

Analysts said the number shows the eurozone is firmly in recession, which will hurt efforts to reduce debt and boost investor confidence. Any improvement is likely to depend on governments and central banks doing more to reform their economies and boost demand.

The European Central Bank is expected to present in coming weeks a plan to help indebted countries such as Spain and Italy by buying their government bonds.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will travel to Germany on Friday to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, and to France on Saturday for talks with President Francois Hollande.

Samaris is asking that Greece be given more time to meet deficit targets and implement reforms. Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, poured cold water on that idea, saying more time would not solve Greece's problems.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2542 from $1.2566 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 78.60 yen from 78.47 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 67 cents to $95.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 99 cents to finish at $96.27 per barrel.

Facilitation Training Day [('TCPA, 17 Carlton House Terrace, london SW1Y 5AS',)]

This interactive course will look closely at the roles a facilitator may play and how a facilitator?s role can encourage long term community development. It will build the confidence of anyone keen to be a good facilitator and give them a solid basis on which to develop their own skills. Local meetings and engagement processes can too often be un-involving, unproductive and even confrontational. Good facilitation can help tackle these problems and help people to make local discussion and planning an enjoyable and productive process. It is also important for the development of better policy and practice, for understanding local needs and developing more sustainable communities.

Video: Tampa hunkers down as Isaac looms over GOP convention

>> this brings us to tampa , florida , itself, where nbc's kerry sanders is standing by where preparations are under way we're told. kerry, good evening.

>> reporter: good evening, brian. over my shoulder the tampa convention center . this historic city says it is ready for presidential politics , for protests next week, but the question tonight is, is it ready for a hurricane? at the tampa bay times forum where the convention is scheduled to begin monday, teams today were putting up rain shelters. much of downtown tampa is a tent city , but in a storm that could be a problem. already this week a thunderstorm kicked up 60-mile-per-hour winds knocking down what was supposed to provide shade from florida 's 90-degree heat. party leaders calculated even though it's the height of hurricane season this city would be a safe bet for the 65,000 people expected to travel here next week. if there is an order to evacuate, it will come from tampa 's mayor, bob buckhorn.

>> in terms of an actual evacuation of the city of tampa , that is my call. we haven't been hit by a hurricane in 90 years but we plan for this every year.

>> reporter: one thing that makes tampa so vulnerable? it's bound by water to the south and west and in a major hurricane a storm surge could swamp the city under more than eight feet of water. even if isaac only brushes the area there could be logistical problems. while the convention is in tampa , the majority of the delegates are staying at beach hotels on the other side of tampa bay in pinellas county . the three bridges and causeways make it a short, 30-minute drive. but if winds require closing the bridges the over land route can take up to three hours each way. police who have been training for crowd control for months say one thing isaac may do is keep tens of thousands of protesters away.

>> this is declared an unlawful assembly .

>> reporter: a federal law enforcement bulletin today warns there is high confidence anarchists will attempt to disrupt the convention. with 4,000 officers trained for the event tampa ace police chief says they're prepared and realistic.

>> frankly the most worrisome for us or for any law enforcement officer is that lone wolf individual that's not communicating with anyone else and is coming in to act on their own.

>> reporter: more than half of those 4,000 police officers here are on loan from other departments around the state. now, if isaac causes problems in their communities, they may have to leave here to go help out storm victims but the tampa police department says they have a contingency plan and that should not be a problem, brian.

>> kerry, thanks. can't wait to get down there and cover it all. kerry sanders in tampa , florida tonight.
