Rain aids battle against California forest fire

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Light rainfall and cooler temperatures are helping firefighters gain ground on a blaze in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles.

Angeles National Forest spokesman Nathan Judy says containment is up to 48 percent Wednesday afternoon on the 4,180-acre blaze.

The remnants of a tropical storm in the region brought rains that were a big help ? the blaze was only 24 percent contained earlier in the day.

Firefighters were concerned that the moist air could lead to lightning and more fires, but Judy says that hasn't been a problem. He says the fire has been stopped along the southern containment line, where structures were threatened.

Permanent residents of the small community of Camp Williams will be allowed to return to their homes Thursday morning.
