This photo was taken of a Bell Elementary School athletic team. It is unknown if this is a basketball or track & field team, or when this photo was taken. If anyone recognizes this photo, or the athletes, contact Billy Armendariz at (575)546-2611 (ext. 2606).

Each and every community in America lends itself to a particular brand. In Deming, its the railroad. What began as a "Tank Town," (watering stop for the "Iron Horses" of the old west) flourished when a now mythical silver-plated spike was driven into the section of track that joined a second transcontinental railroad linking Southern Pacific with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroads in 1881.

From those humble beginnings, we share a branding that was perpetuated by the local newspaper, The Deming Headlight, which took its name from the headlight of the locomotives that rumbled through Deming and the desert landscape.

In those simpler times, a working man and woman found little in the way of leisure, but hours seemed like days when it came to free time in the late afternoon and evenings.

The Deming-Luna-Mimbres Museum is prepared to explore those lazy-hazy days of summer and plan to create a new exhibit titled: "The History of Sports in Deming."

From as far back as the turn of the century - and beyond - Deming has enjoyed a rich and untapped history of sports and leisure recreation.

From a once popular horse racing track, to baseball rivalries between the mining camps in Luna and Grant counties, to drag racing at the old Army Air Base - sports in Deming has put its own branding on the community.

The museum has handed over the organizing of the exhibit to Deming Headlight Editor Billy Armendariz. He is currently seeking donations from the public to help build this exhibit into something that museum visitors can enjoy and the community can be proud of.

School sports has a documented rich history in Deming, but the little known history of ball leagues, community sports (bowling, softball, etc.) and those individuals who have carried on sports careers to a higher level (collegiate or professional) and excelled are virtually unknown, except to families of the individual athletes.

"A history of sports in Deming is a project I have envisioned for quite some time now," said Armendariz. "The museum has been gracious enough to give me space for an exhibit that will chronicle some of this incredible history.

"If you can contribute to this exhibit by donating archival or vintage photos, sports memorabilia, or athletic equipment from an era gone by, let me know so you can be a part of this worthwhile project."
